Any rhyme or reason why sometimes I hear the vacum pump and sometimes I don't when I turn the ignition on? It will pump and other times it will not....even if I have not changed the contol **** that directs the air flow through the vents, to the floor, full defrost, etc. Have even had it in the "off" position and the pump will have to pump sometimes and then sometimes it doesn't.
you may have a small leak in the plumbing. air is most likely leaking into the system, and when you start it up, the vaccuum is not sufficient to work the controls, so the pump kicks on for a few seconds to make more vaccuum
this is just an educated guess. i wouldnt look into it, unless it is constantly running.
My Vacuum Pump Comes On After Sitting All Night Long.
You Can Hear It Pump When You Turn On The Ignition In The Morning While Waiting To Start.
Only Comes On For About 10-15 Seconds. I Thought They All Did That.
That Is The Only Time I Ever Notice It Though.
I Would Not Worry About It Unless I Runs Continously And Often.
I have just had a similar problem with my 2000 f 350 4x4
I go to select the switch from vent to floor heat to dfefrost and all I get is air coming from the defroster vents. I have checked the connection from the pump to under the dash and that seems fine we sucked on it to make the vents switch from defrost to floor and when we let pressure run out it went back to the defrost. The pump under the hood behind the passenger battery is a pump that keeps running and never shutting down. How do you check the pump it never stopss running could it be signs of being to weak and how much are they

It wiil only run when the vaccum pressure gets low. Mine will usually only come on while waiting to start the first thing in the morning. It may come on another time or two during the day (I crank the truck 10-20 times a day) but I don't ever notice it.
