opening up exhaust

When everyone says opening up the exhaust...what do they mean?....just putting an exhaust system on the truck?

Yes, larger diameter pipe and higher flow cats and mufflers.

Yes, its considered opening up the exhaust but don't expect much in the way of gains.

Performance gains will be negligible unless you are making other changes that will allow the engine to breath better. (Such as port matching, performance camshaft, larger intake etc.) It is a whole system and one restriction anywhere will pretty much negate the benefit of the larger exhaust. Sort of like a kink in a hose.

About the only thing you can do to modify the efi intake manifold, short of fabricating your own intake, would be install a 302/351w throttle body, to gain full benefit, you have to port match the intake where the throttle body meets the intake. You could install a 460 throttle body but I'd say thats well past overdoing it.

I was gonna say, headers are usually considered, "opening up" the exhaust, along with the rest of the exhaust system but the stock efi exhaust manifolds are ok for stock to mild applications.

May not be practical. You can certainly get a performance cam and a performance chip. Rocker arms too.

Also a more free flowing air intake to the throttle body.

Perhaps someone else out there knows of a hi-performance throttle body???

Other than that, you start talking about blueprinting. CC the head, polish and match up all the intake and exhaust ports. The list never ends.

I don't believe that Josh has indicated whether he want these mods to be in harmony with the PCM, or does he want to mess with getting a chip or a programmer?

That question needs to be answered first, IMO.

Some, even simple, mods will casue the PCM to throw codes all day long.....

Actually nothing mentioned thus far, should throw a code on his speed density engine. Speed density is sensitive to vacuum levels.

A "high performance throttle body" would be the 302/351w stock throttle body, as its larger than the 4.9's, next step would be the 460 throttle body.

Good answer Josh.

As the old saying goes, 'speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?'
