Hi, 2001 Expedition 2wd,66,500 miles, Trans capacity 13.9 qts, Mercon V. I dropped the pan replaced filter, especially clean inside pan, drained T/C and removed a total of 12 qts. of old fluid from the system. Was fairly happy with that amout. Refilled with Castrol Merc V and went on my way. Truck had a definite shifting improvement but the shudder is still there!
It began at 60-65 mph and then 50-55 and back to usually 40-50mph. So, any suggestions?
Should I be concerned about the 2 qts. of old fluid still in system? Could that be the culprit? Should I look into an anti-shudder agent? Or, do I have to submit to replacing the T/C?
Well you did not sat what type of tranny you have. You used Mercon V and that is for the 4R70W, so I will assume that is what you have, if not then you used the wrong fluid. The 2qts of old fluid will not be the problem. Are you sure this is tranny related? When do you get the "shudder"? Is it during shifts or does it happen while driving and not shifting?
Sorry, yes Tranny is 4R70W. When shudder problem first occurred it was at the 40-50mph range. Then I began feeling it at lower speeds, taking off from stop. I replaced plugs and tested cops, replaced fuel and air filters. No Codes.
After flush, shudder was first felt at 55 mph range rather than 40-45. Then it was felt at 60-65 as I was accelerating to pass and at cruising speeds. As I returned to lower speeds it was obvious the shudder still existed even at 40-45 mph range. Put about 60 miles on it since flush yesterday. If anything, it worsened since the flush.
At first I said no it wasn't a tranny issue but rather a fuel pump or cop condition. But the experience on this great site has led me to believe it is tranny related. any advice, comments, suggestions gretaly appreciated.
Found a additive Greased Lightning Synthetic designed to stop shudder. Unsure if this will help? Please advise.
Well seems that you have looked into what I was going to suggest next. Sounds like you may have a bad TC. I for one am not a big addative person, but have never been in the position to "need" to use one. Maybe others here can give you suggestions on the additive.
I put Dr.Tranny Instant Shutter Fix in my 4R70W to fix a bad shudder. I had the trans flushed with Motorcraft Mercon V, added a 18,000 lb. plate cooler, all with little help.
I put the Dr.Tranny in and have had only a very slight shudder a couple of times in the almost one year since installation. When I did have the shudder return it was under very light throttle as the T/C locked up in OD. It did it at the same place every time, and I could stop it by runnung the RPM up a little more. I could feel the transmission shifting better the more I drove it.
Dr.Tranny is a friction modifier made by International Lubricants (Lube Guard). I was ready to install a new T/C, but now I don't need to for the forseeable future.
I am not involved with this company in any way. Their product just saved me a lot of money and headache.
I had this problem with my Town Car and they did a fluid and filter change and it corrected the problem. They said they found out only the fluid from Ford worked well and they sometimes had to change it twice.
Thank you all, very insightful and helpful info...Yardbird, do you recall how many ounces of Dr. Tranny's shudder fix were needed to cure the problem. I see it comes in a 2 oz tube, was that enough for 14 qts of fluid? Thanks

Hi, I just returned home from the parts store and have to say I purchased Dr. Trannys Instant Shudder Fixx and instantly noticed an improvement with my trans shudder.
Shifting was smoother and the shudder eliminated. How long it lasts I am unsure but I will say for $6.50 it is worth seeing what happens. Thanks for the tip and advice, will keep you updated...
