I need some instructions

I am going to do the tranny fluid change myself this weekend in my 4R100 equipt 99 EB expy with awd. I took a look under it sunday and was unsure on how to do it so thats why I am posting here. Obviously dropping the pan is a no brainer but how do I drain the torque converter? I baught 17 quarts or Mobile 1 synthetic mercron (sp) to put into it. How should I go about changing the fluid in my expy's tranny guys?

If you want to just drain the converter, pull the rubber plug off the bottom of the bellhousing. Look inside and you will see the TC. Now (the fun part) you need to find the plug on the TC (yours is a 99, so you SHOULD have one). To do this you will either have to have someone crank the engine (do not start it, kind hard to do) or use a wrench to turn the crank (easier said than done) till you see the drain plug on the TC. Remove said plug and go kick back for a few hours as it drains.

You can also use a method that requires you to pull the line that goes to the radiator (or cooler if you have one) and allow the engine to pump it out. This way is faster, but I am always afraid of this method as you run it till its almost bone dry in there (that scares me). If you want more info on this method, I think there is an article on it in the Tech section.

have fun

^You can also use a LARGE flat bladed screw driver to pry against the gear on the flex plate to turn the motor over.

Be patient finding that TC plug, it took me an hour, its small, but its there. On my 2001 it was a small square nut, I was looking for something bigger. Once you drop/drain pan, change filter, replace pan, then drain TC, try to have the truck as level as possible when refilling. When you start it, remember that there is no fluid run through the trani yet, it takes a while for it to flow back throughout, so dont freak out when you put the truck in gear and it doesnt move. It takes a while for the whole system and all the valves to fill up again. I sat there going through all gears for ablout 10 minutes before it started moving again.

Do you guys know what size the drain plug is on the TC and do I have to use any special tools to do this?

Mine was a nut with a square head, I fit a metric socket on it, either 8 or 10 if i remember correctly. If you have a metric socket set you'll be fine.
