As you guys think of ways to stop using all cylinders, replace gas with hydrogen and other things, VW is doing it right!

How about a Twincharged V10? Essentially a Supercharger for low rpm and a Turbo charger for the high RPM. Could be the future of gas engines.

Use the article's numbers of HP per Litre and apply it to a 6.8L V10 and you'll get 800HP @ 5500 and 859 lb. ft. at 1750.

I'll take two...

well either party costs me about the same the way I figure it. With the current admin I'm paying more for goods/services, with the other I'm paying more taxes to fund big government, bottom line ? It's either the right pocket or the left pocket, but it's about the same either way.

Ken04 the social liberal and fiscal conservative in me can not find an argument there.

Back when I was a 24K a year income tax payer I had a different attitude. Now that my taxable income has my personal contribution to running this country exceeding 40K a year I am keen to keep an eye on the idiots in WDC and my state capitol...

Leave the poor lawyers alone and take aim at a politicians.... they are the real true crooks in this country...Ok Ok..yes!,,,, it is hard to find a politician who is not also a laywer... so yes!!!!... keep a steady bead on the Yale and Harvard grads as well!

I fully support George W and the War on Terror but danged if I am not quite a bit ticked off on all the other pork spending and BS these so called conservatives are pushing through... it is like the current administration and Congress is trying to out Democrat the liberals...Sheesh!!!

Tie in to the V10...hell I don't know...OOPs yes we were talking DoD systems and devolved into CAFE and EPA regs and got tangential to politics... See what fun a Ford SuperDuty can create... now if I can just find a way to transition this all to a religious discussion we will have straddled all the third rails!

There was a TV special on the other night and it was pointing out what most of us already know, the fact that cars get no where near there supposed sticker mileage rating that every new car has. NOT EVEN CLOSE ! They had an automotive genius on to explain this and his response was pathetic. Something to the effect that the ratings were helpful to consumers. Being lied to is helpful !!!! This tard admitted the mileage ratings were basically impossible to attain under normal driving conditions. It is this kind of crap that spawns all the high mileage BS that is out there. People feel that if their vehicle is not getting the mileage rating that was on the car's windshield, they are a failure. Trust me on this, if a Dodge pickup with a Cummins had a sticker on the window , stating 40 MPG, then yes that is what these guys would claim they were getting. The power of suggestion is huge. V10s are gas gizzling pigs. All the people that never owned one know this! Those of us that own them and appreciate what these engines can do with a gal of gas, well we don't know what we are talking about do we? Life is strange.

the v10 vw is a smoker at 5.0 liters and one turbo per side. you could turn off 5 injectors and still have it run.
the 1.4 liter they are playing with in germany is super charged then turbo'd. 1.4 liter 4 banger. all they did was copy volvos marine motors from back about 20 years ago when volvo took a 4 banger smoker. super charged it for low end and added a turbo for top end.
heck how about the 1.7 liter kabuta /cummins/mercruiser in my small boat it's 120 hp. yes we can now thanks to computers do more to pull hp then before and go back useing old school tech. and i would love to see that 550hp supercharged v10 in my truck from the factory.

Screw the CAFE ratings, the V10 is a "heavy-duty truck engine" and is not covered by CAFE ratings. So there's no incentive unless Ford's marketing people decide it's worth competing with Dodge/GM ...

And I really hope they don't. A DOD motor in 3/4 and 1-ton trucks?

Girly trucks like the Dodge/GM 1500's, and (dare I say it?) even the F150, sure, DOD may make SOME sense... but even still, I hope they don't bother.

art k.

ps: Hydrogen almost REQUIRES a supercharger to get a decent amount of efficiency. Not enough oxygen in the atmosphere at normal pressures. I don't think that 25% figure is realistic when retro-fitting hydrogen to gas engines without using a blower.

hydrogen

i remeber seeing something a while back on tv about ford prototyping a focus that ran on hydrogen. the problem was that you could only go about 150miles on a tank before you had to get more fuel. this engine was also supercharged so it made a decent amount of power. i want to say up to mabey that 150 range. i'll see if i can't find a page on it but the best use of hydrogen is probably going to be with fuel cells. as far DOD with hydrogen, hmmmm....

Fuel cells get close to that 100% efficiency creating electricity using oxygen...

And like I said, the supercharger is a MUST for efficiency with hydrogen.
