I cannot give you any pros or cons, all I can tell you is about my old truck. I had a 1973 F250 4x4 and I loved it. It had a 360, 4spd,and it was a long bed step side. the long bed stepside was a tad ugly, but this truck would go places my buddies trucks and jeeps wouldn't. You could put it low gear, 4x4 low range, let the clutch out and climb just about any grade even with bald tires! It was a great 4x4, but I could have done with out the bad gas mileage. I have a 74 xlt ranger 4x2 now with a 390, and it gets a lot better mileage.

Some of the differences are in the grill, 78/79 have a large center grill whereas the 73~77 have the two grill inserts. The pre 77.5 are known as 'high-boys' and sit higher than the 78/79. The spring setup is different and I think the 78/79 don't have the divorced TC.

The 73~77 have poor power steering setup but that's easy enough to change over. I think 76 and up have the front disk brakes vs drums.

You may also want to consider smog check laws, here in California 73 and older are exempt.

Swaping engines can be done, but can run into problems. If you want to run headers on and FE (and you should) then older ones that came with the FE might be a better choice. I think the frame is different but I've never looked into headers for the 78/79.

I'd go for the 73~77 myself and just upgrade the steering.
