Gentlemen: again i need a hand with the trans.won't shift into 2nd unless i let off on the gas.friend is working on the car and he's even having a hard time with it.trans doesn't slip.fluids have been changed.looks great on the inside.replaced miles of vacuum lines.put in a modulator.now what!!! could it be the wrong modulator ???...it's a 78 f-250.nice truck...it's got the square headlights.guess they changed that in late 78.how many different modulators were their for that year.i don't know jack about this stuff.help please...the boards i checked talked about different ones.different pin settings in them.i didn't know about the pins till yesterday.some have one hose, others have two....someone please put me in a direction of what else i can do.he's had the truck for 4 months.getting the bugs out for me.....again,thanks..joe
gregdatech : the modulator is hooked to another port.which port,i don't know.does it matter? should it be hooked up to the manifold? and why!???the modulator he has on their has only one hose [vacuum].he said their was no screw type adjustment on it also.does this help you? thanks for the assistance.what next!!!.if you fix this,i owe you dinner.....
Im a tad rusty, and Ill go look at my old beast today, but I wanna say it should go to manifold vacuum. The suction pulls on the modulator, and helps with 1/2 shifts if I remember right. There was a model made for cobrajets with big cams, and a result low vacuum that had a larger body, and with normal vacuum would really make it shift.
The vacuum modulator should been hooked too your intake manifold vacuum source. Also, the modulator is color coded, make sure you have the right color code for your type of tranny. I assume you have the c-6? Your auto parts store should verify this. Have Fun, Rob
sounds like a lack of vacuum to me but I know there were three different modulators, at least for the 79 f-15- c-6. One was a high altitude, and I am not sure what the difference was between the other two. I just went to the Ford dealer and said hand me the right one. Colour coding on mine was long gone so no way to compare.
O.K. guys : printed all your responses and will give it to my friend this evening.hopefully he will work on it tomorrow or tuesday.will get back and let you all know.thanks for the input.hope this does it.boy, this one's been a tuffy for him.frustrating for me.still got a seal halfway popping out on the steering box and a sqeeking in the steering that's bothering him to fix and i think it's just about done.this is my first ford truck.bought it in dec.it's very clean and cool. ....460 engine ranger xlt camper special,94000 miles.just startin to break in.all i need is 2 part-time jobs for gas and i'll be happy.....thanks again all..joe
Is your kickdown in proper place? if not it could be set to far forward/back causing the "passing gear effect" disconnet it and go for a run and see. I can't run mine as I put a slight down pressure on the pedal and into second I go.
