I was driving the other day and heard a screech from the engine. I stopped the motor and found that the damper and was real loose so I towed it home. The bolt was ready to fall out and after taking it out I found the threads from the crankshaft embedded in the bolt threads. Whats the fix to this? Heli coil or drill and tap?? Any help would be appreciated.
most common way I have seen that fixed is drill, and tap to next size bolt. since you have to drill and tap for a heli coil anyway. but the bad thing is it's almost impossible to get thta drilled straight with the crank in the block, so some people just find another crankshaft and replace it at the same time since it's out anyway but that all depends on whats been done to the the engine such as balancing etc.
djmac - how accessible is the flange on the front of the crank? I've never looked or measured to see how much clearance there is. Is there a way to drill and tap the crank while it is in place in your truck? It's a lot of work to remove the crank so I wonder if there is a 'poorboy' method possible.
Mr. Fixit, the room isn't usually the problem it's getting things perfectly straight so if you get it off by just a couple of degrees then when you tighten it is only pulling on one side putting a side preasure on the bolt and balancer. I hope that makes sense.
