Speedometer goes crazy, transmission doesn't shift right
98 Expedition, 5.4L, 4x4
I wish I could remember the error code, something about speedometer signal. The speedometer starts going crazy, all over the place, 0, 50, 30, 50, 22, you get the idea. Because the transmission uses the speed to tell it when to shift, it goes crazy too. You can put it in 2nd and limp back home. Anyway, this one really angers me. There is a little plastic gear towards the top rear of the transmission just before it connects to the drive shaft. With a 10mm socket, remove a single nut that hold a retaining arm in place and remove the sending unit. Disconnect the wire from it and pull it out. There is a retaining clip that attaches the gear to the sending unit. My sending unit is fine but the gear gets chewed up about every 5000 miles. Replace the gear, put it back in, and everything is fine. These are kinda hard to find at the dealer, so once you get one, keep the old one and the bag it came in so the next time it will be easy. Hope this helps someone.
