I have a 1990 motor home equipped with a Ford drive train and a 460 ci efi engine . About a year ago I started to get a no start condition . This would occur sporadically and the conditions could be hot , cold , after setting a long time or after setting 10 minutes . What would happen is the engine will turn over normally but not fire so turn over , turn over no fire . I would try and try and try numerous times and then it would start after numerous tries . When it did final start it would sputter and start like it was out off gas .
After it did start it would run normally . At first this would happen not so often but now it does it almost ever time . We have had it into our local MH repair shop many time so the obvious causes have been checked and have spent big $$$ trying to fix . I think this is something that is specifically related to the Ford engine . Ant ideas ??? THANKS
It sound like that you may have a break in the wiring harness to the electronic ignition. With it being a '90 model, you should have a rectanglar silver box under the dash near the accelerator. Start there, cleaning and tightening the harness. The main cable will split and go through the firewall in two places. Take the connectors loose, clean and make sure that the wire clips that hold the looms together is tight. Look at the connectors and make sure that they have not spread apart. Then follow the harness, up over the fenderwell (left side) and across the firewall to the right fender. You will find several more connectors to clean. The last stop will be at the distributor and coil. Any wires that you see wil a slight amount of green corrosion is a candidate for trouble. Make sure that you check the relays and the wire connections.
It is not specifically related to a Ford Engine. Any vehicle that sits for an extended period of time will have the harness corrode. I chased a no start on my 96 to the relays on the left fender well. The connectors were corroded.
Sounds to me like a bad electronic pick-up module in the distributor (stator).
Try to find a cheap distributor from a salvage yard. Or buy and install a new stator.
you should list the things that have been chkd by the other places and I will give some more to chk.
Did they chk fuel pressure ?
did they replace the durasparkII module on the driverside fenderwell.
Also there is a resistance wire in that start circuit that goes open or corroded.
But list what they have done.

Those ignition modules and pickups go bad for sure but how about the fuel pump pressure as Rich suggested. A trained mechanic trying to start this vehicle could get a good idea of what the problem was by listening to it when it actually starts. If it starts with a slug of gas in the engine and lobb's and burble's then your problem is most likely lack of spark. You can pull the plugs B4 it starts to see if they are wet and smelly. If not then you may have a lean condition problem with fuel pressure issue's.
