Intermittent start gas engine
2001 F 250, V10, 87,000 miles
Pulled off the hi way a couple of weeks ago, parked and would not restart. Whirled over fast, no start. After the third try kind of sputtered and died. After the next try or so fired off drove and acted fine. Drove another 60 miles home. It's been acting normal till yesterday morning. It had set for a week and wouldn't start just as before. After trying restart 3 or 4 times started and drove as normal. No sputtering or stalling when driving, runs flawless.
After it set last night I went out, turned the key and listened for the pump. Heard it run 2 seconds and shut off. Tried the engine and it fired right up.
I guess I should have tried the schrader valve to check for fuel in the rail but the pump sounded like it did what it was supposed to. Getting ready for a 1200 trip and I'd like to get a handle on this. Is it a failing pump, pump relay or something completely different. Thanks for the help.
