Vise grips and 1/2" combo wrenches have historically been the tool that I can't hold onto but resently I have been finding them and have a surplus. Who ever would have thought that would happen
My tools don't get lost. They get borrowed. I always know who to ask first though. One guy's got a nasty habit of borrowing both my 3/8 and 1/2 torque wrenches at the same time, my 1 1/8" socket, air hammer, striker, and tape measure. He used to borrow my welding goggles until I bought myself a new pair and gave him my old ones. The same guy also killed my old CP 1/2" impact. He finally bought himself a box of drill bits. Another guy knows where to find my 1 1/2" wrench. The shop foreman also knows where I keep my 29 piece drill bit set.
That's okay though, I know how get into another guy's locked tool box.
I did legitimately lose a 1/2" wrench once though. It got replaced on my next day off.
I'd have to say the 14V 1/2" impact. I like it better than an air gun because it's variable speed, so with a light trigger finger I can use it as a driver without stripping screws. The slight decrease in max torque isn't an issue for properly tightened wheel nuts, either.
I can tell you the ones I find the most of: The tool that I have written off as lost and went to buy a replacement. Usually shows up within a few minutes of returning from the store.
It usually depends on if the other half has been working in the garage... she never puts tools away... ... but over the past 10 years or so, I've become very picky about putting tools away as I'm working. Or at least as I finish a task and clean and put everything away before starting the next task. I also always put tools away at the end of the day, whether I'm finsihed or not - this quirk has probably helped cure the "lost tool syndrome" the most.
From working on bicycles: 5mm hex-wrenches and 10mm box wrenches.
Utility Knives and Sharpie Markers, are missing the most around Home.
When I was an Industrial Electronic Tech/Maintance Mech. it was alway's the Needle Nose pliers that was missing out of the box. I ended up with a real crappy one that the jaws was loose and the handles wrapped in elec tape, nobody wanted that pair it seemed as it stayed in my Tool box and never walked off.
Although not a tool in the sence of the word, i always find myself loosing pencils that are kept in the garage for those times when you need them. I can never find one whenever i need it. I also tend to loose my safety glasses, because i take them off when i am not under the truck/car. Rust is a pain to get out of you eyes.
