The router is similar to the one you show, but, it is an older 'wireless B' router.
I have had NO problems, at all, with the exception that I had to change-out my USB wireless 'transceiver' on this pc, to a wireless 'bridge' so that my VPN to my work pc would actually work. Something about my company's software wouldn't work over USB. It had to be ethernet. (Blazing speed, now.)
As for 1 wired and one wireless, it is my understanding, that 1 pc has to be hard-wired (as the 'controller' for the lack of a better term.)
On my router, I can have up to 4 wired pcs, and/or 256 wireless pcs online.
In my case, I have 1 wired and 5 desktop and 1 laptop pcs running through the router.
Network card??? Any will work, well should. Most pcs now have an ethernet card installed, or, built-in to the motherboard.
I have installed several, but, the Netgear NIC card was the smoothest install that I have done. 5 minute install. Bang. Done.
As for DSL modems. . . .?????? I know NOTHING about them. I yield to others more knowledgable than me, for that.

(Scroll down to 'adapters').
There are cards that install in the pc, and transceivers that connect via USB cable. There are 'bridge' units that connect via ethernet, or even transceivers that plug into a pc card slot on a laptop.
