Apparently there is a bigger problem than I thought. After replacing the flasher and some fuses the signals worked. Then suddenly, after a couple days, they did not again. I checked the fuses and there were two (count em, 2) blown fuses. One - I don't know what it is because the writing on the fuse panel is worn off but it is the lowest, left most fuse. Replacing this one did nothing. The other blown fuse is marked B/U. I didn't have the correct fuse so I temporarily shoved in a 20 or 30 amp fuse and suddenly the flashers worked again. BUT after driving around a little and accidentally leaving the turn signal on after a turn - I see smoke rising from the steering column.
So I pulled over and took out the (very hot) fuse.
HELP ! - Any ideas ?
Also the turn signal lever is very stiff and doesn't return to center after a turn. Is this normal for a 77 F-250 ?
It's Fixed ! Finally, turned out to be the switch in the column. $59 new and a small bitch to replace but I finally have working turn signals with a working return cam.
I think Im having the same problem. How can you tell if its the switch and not the fuse block?
Pull the fuse and check it for continuity, or leave it in the fuse block and check both sides for voltage with the key ON. Either way, you're going to need a multimeter.
fmc is right, that is what I had to do and found out my turn signal cam was bad. Relatively easy fix, and if it is bad save yourself some money and go to Advance and they have those cams in the help section. My local store didn't carry it but he had it for me the next day and it was 15 bucks. Just a thought..good luck
Finally had the time to test it out today, looks like it is the switch. Any tips on getting at the switch to replace it? Removed what I can so far and it looks like a pain.
I just did my blinker switch about a week ago, took me all of about 20 minutes. You will need, philips head screw driver, small channel locks or pliers, 7/8" socket, and a steering wheel puller.
Remove the steering wheel center / horn, take steering wheel nut off. Pull steering wheel, remove blinker switch lever, remove 3 + screws that hold the blinker switch.
Now climb under the dash and find the ' ( ' shaped grey plug, unhook it, in the male end remove the red terminal retainer inside the plug, remove wires from plug, and finally pull the whole assembly up, out and off. Installation is reverse.
NOTE: you may want to write down what wires go where in the plug, i used a fine tip sharpie and wrote the wire colors on the new plug to make reinstall easier.
