Mechanical diode question

Does anyone know in detail what the function of the mechanical diode is in the auto tranny? I called bauman engineering to get a parts list of what I would need to beefup a 92 AOD tranny for my 74 truck to couple to a 351C and he mentioned that but did not get the chance to ask him what that was for.

The mechanical diode is a one way clutch. It holds torque in one direction and overruns in the other direction. As to why the trans needs this, it would take pages to explain.

A one way clutch is also used on a bicycle. That's how you can pedal the bike forward, but the pedals just rotate backwards, or the bike can coast while you are not pedalling.

What is the big advantage of installing it on the AOD retrofit? Does the 80 to 93 AOD not have it? Is there a site you can recomend to learn about it? Thanks for the input.
