My New 05 F150 supercrew will roll backwards when facing uphill at a stoplight. It is an automatic. It is in Drive when this happens. Never had an auto tranny do this, but then I have been driving manual transmissions for a long time. Also, valve train seems to be ticking loudly. Only 4200 miles so far. Anybody else with similar issues??
yeah the truck will roll back on a hill, that is normal.
If you want it to hold drop it down into 2nd and it will hold on the steepest hill. however, you will find upon acceleration it will have limited power and you'll have to put it back in drive.
2nd is for low traction situations, works great in snow

But Builder, I too have developed a loud tap under the hood, with only 4700 miles, just started this past weekend. Everything else runs fine, and the noise seems to be coming from "higher" up in the engine, under the air cleaner assembly. Wondering if the injectors are the culprit.
Truck is now at the dealer for service. They were interested to find out about the tapping noise- suspected injectors also, but said they would look it over, as the sound was unusual. The rep who took the truck in also said it should hold its position on a hill, in Drive.
Mine rolls back only on fairly steep hills and I don't let it do it just to avoid tranny problems.
I'd appreciate an update when you find out what that tap is. Mine developed a whine, electrical in nature but dependent on engine speed, not tranny gear, almost "fuel-pumpish" in nature. Opened the hood to try to locate that noise when I noticed the tapping noise, sounded almost like a diesel. Was yours that loud?
Sounded a lot like a diesel. First noticed it when I was pulling into a car wash. It is a loud ticking , I thought it sounded like valve train noise, as it definitely came from the upper part of the engine. Also, my truck rolls backward on any incline, and I do not like that. I will not let the dealer tell me that that is okay.

Dealer said today: Tranny slipping is normal. (I never had an automatic tranny that rolled backwards, but O.K). Tapping, diesel-like sound is from the injectors and is also normal. Will keep all informed of any further developments on these 2 issues. I would not have bought this truck if I knew it was going to act like this. I still have my 95 F150 300, 5sp manual. 187k miles. It is a much tougher truck.
I thought the transmission linkage on these things were mechanical. Certainly "feels" like it when shifting the tranny lever on a hill, but i could be wrong.
Builder, thanks for the update on the tapping noise. I've heard noisy injectors before (on other fords as well as volvos) but this just seems a bit louder than it should. However, it is in the vicinity of the injectors/fuel rail assembly, so this must be it. I may have them look at it at my 6K service, sometime in December or January.
