He JUST bought the truck. I don't think he is going to trade it in already. Maybe we should try to help him get his current truck up to the task and work with what he has got.

I know, I know, but I said I was being a smart aleck!
Another thing to consider may be a Gear Vendors Overdrive or a US gear unit. This way you will have a final drive ratio similar to a 4.10, when towing in 3rd over. When empty, using double overdrive, a final drive ratio similar to a 3.08. One of these units would be similarly priced to changing gears in a 4x4. You would have a way cool truck as well, with 8 speeds.
Maybe I started off wrong ? this is my first Time in a forum. This may get a little lenghty, but need to explain my situation. 3600 miles ago I purchase a 2005 F150 Larit supercrew, 4X4 3:73 LS rears, 5.4L with towing package, 7200lb GVW, and 18 in wheels . First truck I've had I 20yrs. This thing is awsome, great ride, quite, really great to look at. The reason, tow a TT to, start small for retirement. If I'd gotten 250 I would have gotten a bigger wagon. Not what the wife would work with.
This truck does a pretty good job towing the 7400lb TT, really. I live in Pa with a hill or two. I can pull most Interstate hill in 3rd. There a couple of spots it drop back to 2nd at 3800 RPM and sits right at 62 to 65 mph. This thing is build Ford tough.
I am aware of danger. I weighed it on a certified truck scale and I am grossing 14600. Yes 100 pounds over Fords rating. If I had 17 in wheels I'd be 400 lb under max,( lower geared ); therefore, the brakes are safe(same), body and frame, strong enough (same), tranny same, but not geared the same, engine? OK. My primary safty concern was I had 3960 lb on rear axle, rate 3850. I adjusted hitch to 3700, better ride too. If I am pushing it, it would be the trailor lenght, and wheel base, the TT is 34'8", but the reese dual cam hitch keep things well under control up to this point.
My real interest is old I guess. I'd like the throttle response to be better with or with out the TT. I seem like you have much less engine. I'd like the truck to sound as good as it looks Not loud or cracking, but deep rumble, kinda sophitcated, and I'd like to get displacement and hp to the same number 330, and another 40+ flb of torque would keep me out of number 2. I am going to install a transmission temp guage, maybe rear end temp, that's a maybe.
I was just looking for the most cost effective bolt on to give me the best place to start. I'm going to put the cat back on, just want the right sound. I will get a programmer which one works best for towing, throttle response and engine safty. Is the intake nessecary if so, who's got the best for the Ford
Gentlemen .... Ford does make a real truck, I love it, just want to make it mine
My next is a F350 daully... what do you think I will tow with that?
X GM GUY.... Yes.. this darn ford does a pretty good job for what I am pulling, and the fly by wire throttle or computer, really makes it a little doggy when first merging into traffic. I'd also like a good sound deep throaty and important sound, not crackely and kid like.
I did look up your ideas on gear vendor and the splitter and that sounds real neet, but I need to get more info on that because it seem like without a load it would be shifting all the time, but very effective with a load esp if I could pick the shift point... Thanks for that one
tdemor: One thing to keep in mind with the Gear vendors is that it can be switched on and off as you need it. In other words, you can accelerate to highway speeds then turn on the unit and continue in 4th over, or it can be used through the entire range. Its your choice. You just have to flip a switch.
I used to tow a 30ft Jayco fifth wheel with a 99 Chev 1500, 5.3l w 3.73 gears so I understand what you mean by being a "little doggy when merging into traffic"
X GM GUY ... You have really been of some help.... This spring I will take a serious look at the gear vendor... my wife of course will have a cat, but if I can turn it off and on as needed, that would be a real benefit. I am a driver I drove tractor tailor for 10 yrs.
I have decided I will for sure put the Borla spit rear exhaust system on in the next couple of weeks. It will look awsome and should sound important. I'm still considering the cold air induction system, if I do that I will put in a better mass air flow sensor. The Tranny and rears temp gauge are a given, just need to find the A pillar mount color coordinate. The Chip, well the jury is still out on that. If I need it to get the benefit from the intake, exhaust and air sensor, guess I'll have to do it.... Thanks again You have been a big help... Keep on Truckin' . TomDe
