Huck brakes

I just bought a 1949 two ton truck with the old style huck brakes. The brakes on the rear do not work. One side has a bad axle seal and I can't get the bleeders broke loose. I've messed with Chevy huck brakes before do the Ford brakes work the same. Also is it possible to get new seals for the back hubs.

Thanks Tony

Tony,

Welcome to FTE. Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for you but there a ton of very knowledgable folks on this site that probably will. There are a number of folsk with the larger trucks like yours. I am not familair with the term Huck Brakes. Could just be me and it's a term used for brakes on the larger trucks. This will at least get it bumped back to the top of the forum.

NO, in all cases and in all things Ford works better! Some GM lines, like Caddy and Olds and the old GMCs, are innovative and well built, Chevy is not.

btw, what are Huck Brakes?

Tony,

You must have a F-7 or 8 if it's a two ton, correct? I'm not sure but you could try JobLot for parts for your truck.

http://www.joblotauto.com

They carry brake parts for the F-4 through F-6, I don't know if they have any parts for the F-7 & 8s. You could also go to someplace in your area that works on larger trucks and find out where they go for parts. I have had luck going to industrial type places and finding parts. Places like bearing and hydraulic hose and fitting distributors. I take the part to them and they can usually match something in their inventory.

Good luck,

Bob

Welcome aboard Tony. Sounds like we need a translation of "Huck" brakes from someone who knows - namely you.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the help. I called them Huck because they look like the older brake system used on pre 1950 gm products. The old chevs had two adjusters on top. This has adjusters on top and bottem I'm new to owing old Ford stuff. Most of my antique cars are Studebakers and Dodge. I guess the brakes on the old Ford two ton are similar to the old military Dodge Power Wagon. I took the drums and shoes off and I think I see how they work.

Thanks Tony

Yeah Tony, a few pictures would be worth a thousand words.

One other thing that would help is the VIN. You should be able to find it on a rating plate in the glove box, or stamped on top of one of the frame rails in front of the cab. Finding it on the frame rail may take a little wire brush action to get rid of the crud. From the VIN, we can tell you what the original configuration of the truck was and post some exploded views of the brake system for you. We can also advise you better on where to find parts, etc. if we have the VIN.

Earl makes a good point with the VIN#. There is often some confusion between what is a 49 and what is a 50. The VIN # would be a big help as well.

Tony,
Welcome to the board!! and to the wonderful world of Ford!! Pics definately help around here, if for no other reason than we all like to covert thy neighbors truck.

I've never heard the term "huck" before either. If they are indeed like the old Power Wagons, there are several sites dedicated to supplying parts for them. A quick google search should bring them up.

Good luck with it
Bobby

While you are looking at it, Can you please confirm that you have a small window in the back (vs. the bigger windows that showed up on the 51's and 52's - I'm almost certain you have the smaller window) and look on the firewall for a number that is stamped into it. It's different than the VIN # but with it, we can possibly tell you what the original paint color was supposed to be, where it was built and on what day it was built. We are collecting this information on the 48's - 50's to help us figure a few things out on these trucks. There is a thread at the very top of the forum, one of the Read First threads at the top, that explains this in a bit more detail. Particiaption is, of course, voluntary, but we would really appreciate it.

Thanks

I scanned this drawing out of one of my manuals for whoever is interested:

The page didn't come out too clear when I tried to shrink it down small enough for this page so if you want to see a better, larger image click here

Bob, I was going to put up an image or two as well, but I wanted to make sure which truck model Tony had. You figure it's an F-7 or F-8? Hopefully Tony can get the VIN and we can be sure of the model.
