Engine stand, heavy engine....how?

The bolts are your least concern. Typically the small/cheap stands will flip over when rolling or when you are wrenching, or worse yet when you are rotating the engine on the stand....Be careful. They do make big truck engine stands that mount on both ends but they are too big.

I have a well built home made one. I built it for holding a complete big block (370/427) Ford truck engine. It has two 2" square tube uprights back to back, it don't bounce much, also 4 wheels for stability.

I have a "cheep" engine stand I bought a Sam's years ago, after rewelding most of the seams and adding some bracing here and there it has always done a good job. One thing I noticed, it seems the makers are under the impression that people only build sb chevys, there is quite a differance in the weight of a sb and a FE. Don't even think about using the bolts that come with it. Go to a local fastener store and get L9 or at least grade 5 bolts.
