Ranger door ajar problem

On my '94 the thing that turns the door chime/light on and off is on the inside of the truck, let me try and explain. Where the hinges are on the door, between the hinges there is flat metal right? Well where that metal contacts the vehicle when it's closed, that's where my button is. I know that's it because I can press it when the door is open and it all goes off. I'll take a pic if you like.
