My 17 year old son has a 1993 ranger 4x4 stx that is a little beefed up with a 3.0 liter v-6. For christmas, he wants to get a better sound out of it. He has a cousin with a full size chevy with a 350 with dual straight pipes, no muffler and no cat. My son wants something a sound as close to that as we could get.
I know very little about this stuff. Is there anything we could do to this smaller motor to get a good sound. It is all stock now.
Well the 3.0L is never going to sound like that 350 with straight pipes. That's okay, I don't reaelly like the sound of small block chevys through straight pipes.
I would go with some sort of chambered-style muffler, such as Flowmaster or something like that. Single in, dual out with duals run out the back somewhere. I wouldn't buy anything that is "turbo" style, I don't beleive it would be loud enough for your son.
If he still has his converter, you don't really have to have a muffler. Heartthrob from JC Whitney doesn't use a muffler, except at the tips. Plus it's custom fit for the Ranger. You could get this and if it's too quiet you could just replace the tips with normal pipe.
shoot, put a "Y" after the converter and run flexpipe out behind both rear tires. fake dual exhaust, with a little sound and not near the money of a custom exhaust shop setup.
I put on a 40 series flowmaster and left the tailpipe off and it sounds pretty good. Even with the tailpipe off my chevy with a full single 3 inch exaust with a tailpipe is still way louder. The tailpipe off will give you a deeper sound though. The 40 series flowmaster is less restrictive then the 50 series therefore it's louder. Summit sells a new oversized body flowmaster thats supposed to sound beefier, i havent heard one yet but i bet it sounds good.
what if I did something like this on my 05 edge, another warranty issue?
the congress passed and act into law that basicly states that if anything happens to the truck/car while in warranty as long as the problem is directly casued or with the new part you placed on its still covered by warranty. (and don't let anyone tell you otherwise, dealerships like to say the car is void just becasue you put a cone filter in so they don't have to do costly repairs) If you find out that they are skrewing u around call the number in the back of your drivers manual(ford costomer service) is they are a certified ford dealership and they are found in fault they can have there certification revoke. And usally if you make a fuss around the guy that you are going to call they usally fix the problem knowing that you have them by the *****. they also do the same crap if you buy your ford from a different dealler
I have received some good advice on this page from various members with suggestions for an exhaust for my son's 1993 4x4 ranger with a 3.0 liter single cab. I thought the best bet would be a flowmaster or something similar with a single in dual out (my son wants dual exhaust and as deep and agressive sound as he can get. The other option seems to be the hearthrob syste. Does anyone know where I can get these systems to fit this truck. I see a lot for a 1993 ranger extended cab with 4.0 but not specifically what I need. I can't even find just the flowmaster muffler to fit it. even without dual exit. Any suggestions?
He is also looking for a decent front grill guard and possible some bed rails. It is an STX ranger if that makes a difference. Anyone have any suggestions on where to look for these as well?
Everything outside of the specific muffler you are wanting is on Ebay right now.
As for the reg cab vs. Super Cab difference, that can be dealt with. After the exhaust manifolds/cat convertor, everything runs through the same space under the truck. Just trim a SuperCab pipe to what is needed, I bet.
Ebay ain't something I'm always in the mood for, but convenience rules. A loudmouth muffler (for the Camaro) and a dual exhaust (just muffler on back) for the Ranger to follow the Z28 set-up I won last week makes me feel warm and fuzzy for once.
well LMC trucking can fit all your sons needs. its a free catologe that sends a bi monthly issue with new products and interesting items for you make and model. they also carry remanufactured parts and molding for the trucks so you can allways find a replacement for the bent bumper.
