does anyone know the stock gear ratio on a 79 bronco with 9" rear. or where it is located on the rearend itself so i can tell what it is . any help would be appreciated.
They came in a range believe it or not. If you still have the vin tag from the
original doors you can tell from that. if you want email me the vin tag info and I can tell you what gears it came with. The range of ratios is 2.75 to 1 on up to 4.56 to 1. the info I need is listed on the door tag under the heading axle it should be a two digit code or a two digit code and a single digit code. You can post the info here or email me and I'll get back to you.
I have to say, I've never seen a 78 79 Bronco with anything but 3.50 gears, and why do you say Limited slip, my 79 doesn't have one.
The best place to find out for sure would be on the front diff cover, unless you thing you can find a tag on the 9" somewhere.(Front and rear gears are the same)
get the info on the tag and let us know what it says.
and why do you say Limited slip, my 79 doesn't have one.
All 4 of our 78/79 Bronco's had L/S diffs in both ends, but you are correct, I was making an assumption based on that. My current 79 has an open rear, but the center section is out of an F-150. It had a L/S until I blew it up.
The standard gear ratio is the 3.50 and I have read that the broncos and F150 trucks that had the full time case could be 3.00 gear ratio. I have a full time set up and it has a 3.50 gear. I have never found anything in any 1/2 4x4 set up other than a 3.50 and 90% of them have been open units. I've found more trac locs in vans than I have any trucks but that just could be the area I live in.
cookie88, your saying they had Limited slipes front and rear?
I want to say all the 78 79 Bronco's with part time 4wd might of everywell had a limited slip at least out back.
The full time 4wds don't have the limited slip, b/c all 4 wheels were suposed to be pulling all the time, which might not be somthing you'd want on ice or snow.
I gotta stop grouping everything together. One of the four had a 203 case, didn't have that one long and never had the covers off that I can remember. The other three had 205's and two of those those have trac-loc diff's in the front. Either that or somebody stacked up about nine washers behind the side gears....sure look like clutch packs.
I can't say for sure if they came stock or with the option of a trac lock front diff, can someone clarify this? I know at least a option if not stock for the rear(with a 205).
