Cleaning inside the cowl.

Is there a good way to get all those fir needles and maple tree seeds out of the cowl vents? It's a 78 f-250. Thanks

there is no really good way, the cowl goes over to the vent boxes on the side of the cab. theres drain holes on the boxes. i just ran water through it and let everything run out the bottoms of the boxes. might not work for something as large as fir needles and such. theres a plug in the front of the box, but that could be a pain to get to.

Actually if everything is dry there is another way.

Set up an air compressor system and put an air blower attachment on the hose.

Blow out one end of the cowl to get it clean, now take a stiff piece of cardboard (folded to fit the slot but will open wider to fill the width of the cowl)

now, shove it through the last grill slot (on the end that you cleaned) and lay it in at a 45* angle right to the bottom of the cowl.

Now blow out the crap starting at the end that wasn't clean.

This should remove close to 99% of the debris unless there are wet leaves in there.

If the leaves are dry, crush them to little pieces.

Dennis,
Thanks for that tip! I have often been frustrated with the pine needles that get in my cowl also, as I live in the mountains..

Is there any way to keep more needles and seeds from falling in and accumulating?

I removed my front fender splashshields today to get ready for painting, and I noticed the "chute" or vent where that stuff is supposed to fall out from the upper cowl. Its under your front splash shields if you have a clog. I noticed old beehives and stuff that helped start a jam.

Since I have about 25 Doug Firs on my lot, I put 1/8 mesh screen under the cowl grill. It's about 95% effective.

pulled the grill, carefully cut and bent the mesh to fit. Attached it with hot glue to avoid fasteners. Once it's in place, it is trapped.

When removing my old doors I ended up breaking most of the bolts because they were rusted/seized inside the cab frame. I had to cut open the inside kick panel to get at the plate they bolt into and when I saw the mud and junk in there it was no wonder everything was rusty. Nice and clean inside now, just have to weld the access back up now.

Bdox, You pulled the grill ?

The cowl with the fresh air grill is one piece construction and the grill doesn't come out.

What do you mean ....you pulled it ?
