Heating and AC malfunctions
Hello,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I'm having trouble with my ac and heating on my 96 F150, in the summertime when I switch from panel to max ac it will blow out the dash ducts for a while then switch to the defrost ducts, it doesn't do this all the time, what I’ve noticed is when the vehicle is sitting still idling in the driveway it seems to work fine for as long as you sit there, I can drive it less then 5 miles and it will change to the defrost duct.
Then here comes fall, when I start up and switch to the defrost mode and let her warm up, sometimes I get hot air and then bam cold air comes out the defroster.

Any suggestions.
Thanks,

This sounds like a blend door problem to me. The blend door opens and closes to redirect air between the floor/dash vents and the defrost vents.
My old 92 F150 had this problem, and turned out to be a broke vacuum line (little white straw under the hood back near the heater core). When I touched it, it disintegrated in my hands---those little plastic lines are notorious for dry rot.
I just cut out the brittle section, and fitted the two ends into a traditional rubber vacuum hose with ID equivalent to the OD of the plastic line. Works like a champ.
