Post Hard vibrating issue

This is my first post ever, so be easy on me. I have just purchased a 2003 F-250 SuperDuty. It has around 52,000 miles on it. My problem is this. When driving about 30-40 MPH and on a bumpy road, my steering wheel will start to vibrate/move right to left violently. At first I thought it was a flat. I pulled over and checked all the tires. They are all fine and have about 70% tread life on them. I checked all the lugs and they are tight. When on the interstate and I hit some bumps, there is no problem and I feel no vibration at all. This has happend 3 times now. When this happens the steering wheel rotates left to right by about 2 inches. I am not a mechanic by any means, but everything under the truck seems to be in place.

The wheels could be out of balance or be bent.Try rotating them and see if you still have the problem.

Deans,
It could be tires or a few other things.
Shocks
Ball joints
Wheel bearings
Bad steering stabilizer (if installed)
or the front hubs or needle bearings inside the hubs.
I would make sure your hubs are unlocked and the front axles are free to turn by hand.
Then if you can jack up the front of the truck to chk play in ball joints and wheel bearings.
The stabilizer usually starts leaking fluid around the seal .
If you need more help just ask
Rich
And welcome to FTE!

Welcome to FTE, deans316.
Along the lines with what FortyFords said:
Do you have 4x4? Large diameter tires? Lift kit?
Bump Steer is when your wheels steer themselves without input from the steering wheel. The adverse steering is caused by bumps in the road interacting with improper length or angle of your suspension and steering linkages.
But, the steering stabilizer could be bad if you have one…look and see if you can see oil seepage. I would also check the rubber bushings on your sway bar, which runs behind the front axle crossways then back and up to the frame. The two small arms that go up to the frame tend to wear out often.
It could also be that it has either some toe in or the camber is off. In that case you may want to take it in and the frontend aligned and, as stated by Scott, get the tires checked for balance.

My truck is not a 4x4 nor does it have a lift kit. Looks like I will be taking it in to have it looked at. Thanks for all your help.
