I recently purchased an 89 F250 with the 7.3 in it, as winter is quickly approaching I was wondering if anyone on this forum knew where i could get a winter radiator cover for my truck. (I am refering to the leather type covers that go over the grill to restrict airflow into the engine compartment) your help is appreciated.
You could visit a local upholstering/vinyl shop and have them make one for you. Make sure it will open in the center to allow the clutch fan to operate properly.
If the t-stat is working properly you might not need the cover, especially if you normally pull a load. My engine ran cold for a couple of winters and I used the cardboard trick. When I changed the t-stat the problem went away. If you seem to be running cold it's also possible that someone may have changed the t-stat and not installed the genuine ford part. There is a big difference in how they work. The only way to tell is to pull the t-stat and if I did that I'd go ahead and put in a new ford part. I'd almost bet that will fix the problem but in the meantime a makeshift radiator cover can be made with peices of cardboard cut to fit between the grill and the radiator. Stick those behind your seat and wait and see if you need the cover.
I was just wondering, how cold is it running? Mine just sit close to the cold line, a little over, not even at the 1/4. I got a bra snapped on the grill many years ago and when I pulled the camper with a facing wind at about 10 F, the engine got a bit hot.
I wonder if I have the proper thermostat. Where should the needle be?
Lund makes grill inserts tha snap on and look decant for like 70 bucks look in jcwhitney i have them and like em get the cold front ones but they also have stainless steel billet type ones too
