I was wondering if anyone had info on switching over to Auto Climate Control from the standard set-up on an XLT. I am guessing that it is not a simple matter of replacing the control unit.
Also, if the climate control deal was possible, an upgrade to the steering wheel that has the radio buttons and such would also be cool.
this was covered a while back. in the end you will need a lot of time and about 1,800.00 in parts. becuase the auto climate system also includes the mpg coputer harness. you need the sensors new harness. dash board ,message center, wheel controls, wheel harness and a good amount more. they covered it in the expy and f150 forum.
Well... it's different, tho. The Climate control in a super duty Ford is not related to the climate control of the 1/2 ton chassy.
In 2004, you couldn't get climate control on a King Ranch (or Lariat) F350, but you could get it on the EB or limted X. At the time, I was trying to buy a KR w/ the climate control. I was trying to convince the dealer to do the modifications. Now... I forget the reason that they came back with for not being able to do it --- but I remember it being a showstopper _and_ I believe they tried hard as I was activly comparing against the tricked out GMC (I was trying to get _them_ to price movable pedals into their 3500).
ZBeeble...I would have like the auto climate control, but I had to have an XLT. I wanted true blue, and grey cloth interior...so I had no choice. 'Course, I love the chrome too.
Anyhow, I do know that F-150 and Expedition stuff won't work, but I was trying to find out how aggravation and expense it would be to switch. I'm sure there's more to it than the controls...but I figure it';s worth looking into.
lets start with a parts list as I have rebuilt my entire auto climate control system(ATC)
1. Control Unit
2. Blend Door Motor
3. Maybe A Different Heater Core
4. Temp Sensor Inside and Outside
5. Reprograming of GEM
6. Engine Coolant Temp Sensor
7. The List Gos on and on
I repaired mine I have an explorer but fords ford uses almost the same setup in all there vechiles except those with Dual temp settings for the fron drivver and passenger. The steering wheel controls my buttons stoped working on mine and it cost $450.00 for a new wheel because you can not purchase just the buttons. Sorry for the bad news.
Well... the X's system groups quite a few of the controls in the "box" ... and the manual and automatic boxes are different. I don't know how different. I was somewhat amused to see that the fan (for instance) is on the motor side of the firewall in the auto case (I don't know where the manual one is, but I suspect that fans are normally in the passenger compartment).
I remember computers being an issue. I remember wiring harness being an issue. If Ford had left the same wiring harness, it would have been far easier, but they hadn't.
True my computer went out at about 100,000 miles and then the blend door motor and the heater core all had to be replaced. Now the AC compressor clutch is starting to stick on and off. The HVAC system in the X was reworked in 2000 to little to late for me. I believe the boxes are very different. I am not sure though. I know the vacum lines going into the core are different and so is the blend door motor mount. other than that they are the same.
