i am having a very hard time trying to figure this out. when i turn the key its acts like it is going to start, but as soon as i let go of the key it die's. i have tried to mess with the timing so thats not it, and i did an ignition system swap and put in a tfi box, i was told that when they go out they get hot to the touch and its not, sooo......... any ideas ?
I would check the switch that is piggie backed on the column under the dash and see if it is aligned right. oops you have a 85 I am not sure if 85 was the same or similar as the 87-96. it sounds like a column thing not an engine ignition thing. seems like something is not aligned right.
if you aren't gone yet (i know its saturday morning)
it could be the switch. the box gets power from the white wire while cranking only. and the red gets power in start/run. if there is no power to that red wire in run, jump a wire directly from the battery. then try cranking it. if it starts and runs it is definatly the ignition switch.
now i am confused, i got home from the hunting trip(didnt get any thing ) and went to start the bronco just for kicks, and it started right up i really have no idea what the thing is doing. at first i was thinking the ignition like oldhalftons was saying but now.....? i just dont have a clue, could it get to hot and not start? or could the vacuum leak have to do with it
i just swapped out the ignition switch in my bronco and it didnt fix the problem, witch is... at first the thing starts fine and runs ok. i went for a spin down the block and it ran fine. i stopped in a small empty lot to play a little and make sure things where good but as soon as i stomped on it, it died and now it wont start again. when i turn the key it turns over and acts like its going to run but as soon as i let go of the key it dies. if i hold the key "on" it will run and i can give it gas but it still cranks the starter and that will eventually kill my starter.
my next plan is to replace the key portion of the ignition that is in the steering column and see if that works, unless any one has a different idea, if so PLEASE post up cuz i am running out of them
could it be flooding when i stomp on it and thats why it wont start? but then why would it run till i let go of the key? i am just stumped

What was the result of this test? Have you even tried this?

Did you try this? If a new one aligned the same is slapped on there, would it not cause the same problem?
Do you have Spark at the coil when it cranks and wont run, because earlier you said it would run while in the start position and die when you released the key to run..... Now you are saying it wont even start, which is it?
If you have Spark, move the carb butterfly and see if it squirts gas in, eliminate those, my guess will be that you have no spark during the times it just cranks.
Do some testing and thinking and lots of reading before spending any money and assuming its the lock and key cylinder......

Its behind the battery mounted on the fender, it has a positive cable hooked up to one side of it from the battery, and another cable coming off the other side of it that goes down to the starter.... Do a search of the forums for how to use a jumper wire to test it...
