Chipped key or no chipped key

I recently purchased a 2003 F-250 super duty with the 5.4l 3v Leriat. When I purchased it no chipped keys came with the vehicle but it still starts. I was informed that sometimes when a remote start is installed they tape a key to it to allow it to start but I'm not sure if it has a remote start. My question is does this model and year require a chipped key, if so where would I find where they installed the remote start to get a copy of the chipped key, and if it doesn't have a remote start then how is it possible that it's still starting? I'm going crazy trying to figure this all out! Thanks in advance.

I don't think they had chipped keys 10 years ago, I think they started that in 09ish. The guy that installed a remote start in my 10' f150 had a hard time, it was one of the first trucks he dealt with that had chipped keys.

1999-2007 trucks DO NOT HAVE THE PATS system. Ford started using PATS in the 2008+ trucks due to increasing thefts. just go down to Walmart and pay the $5 for a new regular key.

oddly, all the Excursions have PATS
