FM146 & M5OD ?

I'm thinking about doing a auto to manual swap and wondered what vehicles to look for that have the FM146 or M5OD, also which is the better trans. Is there a site to help identify transmissions.
Thanks,
Shiny

Avoid the M5OD if at all possible. Find a 83-87 Ranger/Bronco II with the Mitsubishi 5spd. The M5OD has problems with the shift rail plugs and the synchros for 1st and reverse wear quickly. The Mitsubishi will outlast you and there are plenty of them out there. The M5OD is easy to identify it is long and narrow, made of aluminum and has two large plugs labeled fill and drain.

MKmaverick72, you're the first person I've heard who recommended the FM146 over the Mazdas. I, too, have heard about the shift rail problem, but even then, everything I've heard still says the Mazda is better than the FM146. The FM146 had problems with the input bearings.

As far as finding them, I believe the FM146 will be found in some '87 BII's/Rangers, most '88's and '89's. The M5OD will be found in any newer RBV. I don't know if FTE has got a transmission identification page yet, but they do at the ranger station.

I checked out a U Wrench It junk yard today. They had 2, 87 BII's and 1 86
Ranger. They all had 5 speeds. They also had a complete running 87 Bronco II with 5 speed for $750. Anyway, I checked out the transmission and they all had 12 Bolt pans, which I think means Mits. According to the ranger station, but they also said that the FM146, wasn't put in 4x4 BII/Rangers till 1988. so these transmissions must be FM145. Our these good transmissions. I heard that they are shorter than the automatic I have and I would have to change driveshafts if I went with the FM145. I heard that the FM146 is the same length as my auto and I wouldn't have to change driveshafts. Does anyone know for sure.
Thanks,
Shiny
