Service Block?

How can you identify if a block is a "service block". Is it just the vertical ribs on the block? Any certain casting numbers to look for? What are the advantages/disadvantages to this block? thanks

Well a service block was just an over the counter part. Same as a production block for the most part be it a 360, 390 427 or 428. Some blocks have casting numbers and some do not. Some have the outer ribs and some do not. 70's service blocks were commonly found with HD cranksaddles, Reinforced webbing and outter vertical ribs. Beside those mentioned the only other advantage at the time was they were new. Other than some casting differences through the years a service block is just as good as any other production block. Well ok...but you'll have to take the heads and 3x2 that go with it. And I guess I'll take your CJ block, C4 ported heads and tunnel ram that goes with it. Sound fair?? I really think you should also throw in some polished carbs for the TR tho.... Then maybe we have a deal. Maybe....

LOL.....
