Im currently looking to get a 97-99 F150 some time soon. Now im not up on much of the ford f150 trucks but im lookin to get the extended/super cab, flareside with the short box, 4X4. For starers does Ford offer that combo I just stated? Im not exactly sure. Im still hung up on which engine i want. im torn between the 4.2 v6 or the 4.6 V8 i believe it is. I recently owned a 1999 chevy tahoe with the 5.7 and am real weary of poor gas mileage after that truck. i sold it due to poor mileage. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what engine to go with and why and perhaps some estimated gas mileage i should expect with each. I do plan on doing some work on it such as exhaust, headers and intake etc once i purchase it. So any help from yall i would really appreciate.
the 4.2 is a little small if your doing any work. the 4.6 V will get up to 20 mpg if you drive easy and stay on the highway. the 5.4 is about 17 if you drive easy and stay on the highway. your milage can be 12-14 if you hot rod around and have a lead foot.
well i dont really haul or tow anything so maybe the 4.2 is where i need to be, but i do like a little extra power, it seems like the mileage isent that far off between the 4.2 and 4.6 so either or might work fine .the toughest work it would see most likely is gettin stuck in a snow or mud and climbing small hills since I visit a rural area alot. thanks alot for the info on the mileage, every where i read i kept getting bs figures for it
Hey ROC, I once drove a friends 97 F-150 with the V6, it was a standard cab 2WD, that seemed to be good for that truck. I owned a 98 F-150 SuperCab 4WD with the 4.6, I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina, no shortage of hills around here... the 4.6 for me got around 18.5 MPG on the road and about 15 just driving around town, if you want the supercab 4WD I would not go with anything less than 4.6, but that it just my opinion. I didn't do much hauling or towing, but when I did the truck had enough power to do the job and still get good mileage.
The 4.6 is, all around, a far superior motor. Real world mileage would be about the same. No question, if it's a 4x4 ext. cab, get the V8. There's a recent thread asking for peoples mileage in this section.
