Son has a 95 F150 inline 6 4x4, had bad exhaust leak and stopped up
cat, had new cat put on and also had put in new rebuilt engine locally, his had over 160k on it and numerous problems. His gas mileage has always been very poor for a 6 banger, around 10 mpg combined. Looks the original 02 sensor, anybody have any thoughts, will a new 02 possibly help his mileage, I figured it may have contributed to the stopped up cat too.
A new O2 sensor can't hurt, before all that crap clogged the cat it had to go by the sensor. If the sensor is not able to read properly it could be running rich. Are those miles highway or in city? I got 10 MPG on my 6, but that had a 1000 pound utility bed on it. I assume you did all the basics like check tire pressure, tune-up (new plugs and air filter on new motor) He's not running in four wheel drive? what size tires? If he has bigger than stock, that could be doing it, maybe the gear ratio he's running.Does the motor run good, could the timing or something be off?
If it's running too rich it could possibily clog up the cat after time, changing the 02 sensor would be a good idea - they usually supposed to be changed every 50K. Like suggested before, a good tune up would help also.
Also does your son have a heavy foot by chance? I know if I drive my 300 like a bat out of hell I can get 10 mpg.
