2001 ranger 4.0L V6 "E" (vin code) I have cleaned the EGR valve, replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body, cleaned the MAF, replaced all 3 o2 sensors... I still get serious pinging under moderate to heavy acceleration. What else can I do? The only thing i haven't replaced yet is the PCV valve because no one sells it for my truck. I have to order it from Motorcraft. Will the PCV valve make a difference? If not how do i go about checking for vaccum leaks? I'm a nuts and bolts mechanic, this emissions crap is driving me crazy!!!
Some of the SOHCs can develop leaks at the upper intake area which causes the engine to run lean and hence increases the likelyhood of pinging. Ford Techs say they are seeing this more often these days as the 4.0L SOHC ages a little bit. The gaskets are cheap and should be replaced, you'll need a long T30 socket bit for the intake bolts, I believe.
Hey Rockledge, I'm starting to notice that you are the first person to reply every question i post on here. Maybe i should just e-mail them directly to you...
Seriously though, Thanks for the info, it's supposed to rain all weekend in CT so i'll lock myself in the garage and tear apart the engine...
Feel free to email me any time. On the other hand, I would recommend that you continue to post here at FTE because of the exposure your question(s) will get. I'm certainly not always right about things, nor do I have as broad a knowledge base as many other people who often post here.
Yep, more rain is forecast here in CT this weekend (as if we need it), but like you, I've got plenty to keep me busy indoors.
Good luck with the pinging issue. It sounds like you have done your homework already, but FWIW, there are some informative links on the subject in Section V of the following Tech Info thread:
I was told that if it happens too long it can burn a hole in the piston... $3- for an intake gasket or $100 for a piston... i think i'll try the gasket.
