'89' Ranger Tapping Noise

I have a 1989 Ranger with a 2.3L engine, EFI, OHC, DIS. It has developed a loud tapping noise that can be heard from the top of the engine, just under the valve cover. Any ideas on how to get rid of the noise would be appreciated. Thank You!!

Sounds like a lifter problem, hows the oil pressure?

Didn't the 2.3L have cam shaft and follower wear problems? I replaced the cam and followers in two 2.3liters (1979 and 1983). Fairly easy to replace and took care of the tapping noise.

Thanks for the responses. I see I can check my oil pressure by removing the oil pressure switch and attaching a gauge--question--do I need a particular type of gauge or can I just ask my local auto parts dealer? Thanks Again.
