Hello, i'm new to this forum and it's great. I have some questions. I just bought a 1979 f150 4X4 with 351m/c6. The tranny is good and the motor is tired. I have a 74 460 with a bad tranny, but the motor is supposed to run great. What do I need to do or watch for? I know that i'll need to change the motor mounts, anybody ever build a set? Also, since this is a 74 460 and it came out with low horsepower, how can I get the horses that the 72-previous had. I know that they had more than twice the horses the 73 and on had. I want to build this pickup like it came off a ranch, except with a hot rod engine. \
I believe the horses REALLY ran hard back between 68 and 70. Not sure how much but think the HP dropped off a little in 71, then more in 72, then way down in 73. Someone with some good knowledge on this should chime in soon to help with more accurate numbers.
The 460 should bolt right in on the 351M bell housing. You will need mounts and exhaust mods to get her done.
the 460 was lite on comp. like 7.5-1 you can get a intake,750carb,early timing chain, and headers are all good bolt on if you want more try some exaust port work,a bigger cam as far as motor mounts i used l&l mounts and headers a little spendy but a great product. good luck
i have a 79 f150 4x4, originally had a 351m with the c6. the guy i bought it off of put a 460 in it from a 76 camper special. im not really sure but my motor mounts almost look home made, ill try to get some pics sometime. otherwise i do have engine pics in my gallery.

If the 460 is in a truck this is a bolt in deal. I'd freshen up the 460 before I did all the install work but other than regular engine and machine work none of this is complicated. Best of all is you can use 100% Ford script parts. If you need to over bore the engine install some good pistons like KB138's a reasonable camshaft like Comp X4256H, timing chain 68-71 vintage, Edelbrock Performer intake and a 600-650 Carburetor. Or you can build a stroker and really make it into a hot rod. Depends on the budget and testosterone level.
I want to make a screamer out of it. It is a D3VE motor, or D8VE, not sure, but I want to make it scream, but have a tight budget. The guy I got it from said that it ran perfect and that he wouldn't tear it down and rebuild, just put it in, but if it has low compression (7.5) or something like that, can I still make her roast a set of 33's with out power braking? The motor is out of a 73-74 Galaxie. I am very excited to get started on it, but want to take some time and do it right, but again, i'm on a quite cheap budget. Want to be able to run her through the mud on the weekends, and then out run the rest of the small block boys on the way home! Any suggestions would be great,
thanks guys
i have a stock 76460 in a 77f250 4*4 that has been balanced with performer intake,750carb,l&l headers and will roast my35in bfgs and will clear a fours in the mud with no problem
You will need to change the engine mount towers because the 460 block is wider than a 351M. A good idea would also be to get some D0VE heads or some cobra jet heads to get the compression up.
In 460's that came out in the late 60's to about 71, they had 365 HP. By the time the last 460 was made in the 90's, they had dropped to 212 HP. Yours will probably be in the mid 200's somewhere. Then I'd get an intake, carb, cam, and headers to help it breathe. Don't forget to have the heads gone through and ported. That is probably the most important thing to do on these engines since the exhaust valves are pretty restrictive.
It shouldn't be hard to get 450-500 HP out of a 460. None of this is new info, though. Look around and you will find tons more on here.
One more thing. If the engine came out of a car, you will also want to get the rear sump conversion kit for it. That part # is M6675A460. It will make changing the oil much, much easier. I just bought one from Ford for $140. It gets real old having your oil go all over your crossmember.
If the engine came from a car, then the exhaust manifolds will hit the frame at the donut, you will have to put truck manifolds on unless you notch the frame.

I prefer using some good frame exit headers myself. It helps a little with HP too. And yes, 68-70 Lincoln heads will get you higher compression.
By the way, D0ve = 1970 Lincoln 460 engine via fords code. D = 1970's series, C = 1960's series. Therefore a C and a 9 would indicate 1969, D and a zero = 1970, D and a 1 would indicate 1971, D and a 2 would indicate 1972, and so forth. The VE indicates v-8 and Lincoln.
If you can get your hands on some heads that are stamped C8VE, C9VE, or D0VE, (68 lincoln, 69 lincoln, 70 lincoln)you've acquired some high compression heads that will get you what you want. (they didn't make a truck 460 in those years unfortunately)
The other way, which would be better and much more expensive, would be to get some aluminum performance heads.
