So last night i picked up a 460 motor(thanks again penginisto) and i was looking at my parts truck, a 76 F100 2wd. It has a 360 C6 and I think a 9" rear. And it is getting in my head that a nicly built 460 with the C6 and 9'' rear could be a nice drivetrain. The truck is all original and has no rust except on the bed floor (which would be more reason to tubb it). Let me know what you think or what you would do or any ideas about this.
Just make sure you have the proper bellhousing or adaptor plate to make the C6 work with your 460. I believe the input shaft on the transmission is longer for the FE blocks than other Ford engines as well. The rest should work. Will need to change the engine mount towers to match the 460 as well, but that's a minor swap.
All,
Has anyone ever supercharged a 460?
Here's what i think:
Build a 460 to 8:1 compression ratio.
Add a supercharger.
Add Nitrous.
Add BIG HP!
I'd specualte you could get 500HP, not to mention, stump pulling torque.

KingFisher
theres a guy in the offroad forum who has a 513 stroker that makes like 500 some hp with no blower. i would definately splurge and do the project your thinking about if i had the cash
watch the 9 ", I have gone through 4 with 460 C6 combo. I am currently on the phone looking for a Dana 70
I'm running a 78 F150 4wd with a 460, 9" w/3.50 gears and 35's. Even with all the pounding I do off road, I've never had a problem with the 9". It's got a mini-spool to boot.
I ran 460,c-6,9",31x19.50 M/T's with 3.50 gears for years.daily driver(except snow) 13's on weekends with capped exhaust and never had a problem.Until wife tried to cut down 3 ft. oak.
Im running 40x18.5x15 Ground Hawgs and my 460 is mildly built pushing 500hp. All I can say is when I was running 39x18x15 Mickey Thompson's I could not keep a nine inch in it. since I have changed to Ground Hawgs my problems have moved to the drive shaft and me breaking, twisting, and snaping it.
I have a 460 with a c6 and a 3L00 9 inch rear end. I've had it put together about a year and so far no problems. Skybob, I pulled a 390 and 4 speed out of my truck to put the 460 and c6 in. Let me know if you run in to any problems. Just get a c6 to fit a 351M, 400, 429, or 460 and it will bolt right up with no problems. The rest is just a matter of engine stands like RR4E said.
Well Im not saying that a nine is not a good rear end. I love mine and I know some guys in VA that are running 44's with a nine inch and they would not trade it. I am just trying to figure out what I can do to keep my truck on the road and off the blocks.
thank ya for the input. I was thinking i could push about 500hp without the blower, just a good build. So i take it my my C6 wont bolt up to the 460? I think ill be ok with the 9" rear cause ill be running smaller tires. I would like to do the swap for as cheap as I can. Does anyone know any cheap tricks about doing a swap like this?
Skybob. As far as the c6 that is in the 76. If it actualy had a 360, it will not bolt up to your bellhousing. A 360 is part of the FE family, all FE bellhousings are the same. They are all round at the top. Look down between the fire wall and the block where the block meets the bell housing. You will see what I mean. A 460 is flat at the top of the bell housing Kind of looks like this /--\.
I hope my crude drawing makes sense. Just look at the 2 blocks, and you will see what I mean. I would highly recomend calling around to your local wrecking yards and finding the absolute cheapest c6 that you can find. In other words look for a rebuildable core. Take your core to the shop and get them to go trhough it. Please believe me.....once you get it in....you do not want to pull it back out. You will see what I mean just trying to get it in. The transmision that you are looking for will be a c6 with the big block pattern. This transmission will fit all of the following engines....351M, 400, 429, and 460. Do not get the transmission that fits a 351W or 351C. W and C are the small block pattern. If you get a 351, make sure it is a 351M. I know a ton of cheap tricks and tips to make your life so much easier for this swap. Let me know what you want to know about, and I'll explain it the best way I can. Also, be advised that I have a digital camera, and I'm not afraid to use it if you need pictures. It would help a ton for you to give me a little more information. Are you building this truck strictly for a hot rod, or a nice daily driver or what? Is the 76 equipped with A/C and power steering? If so, do you wish to retain them? What did the 460 come out of, and does it have the brackets and pulleys with it? I'm assuming that the 76 is 2 wheel drive. Is that correct? Answer these things if you would, and we can start building away. In the mean time, start looking for the motor stands and mounts for a 460. There are only 4 bolts that hold them on, so their simple to get off. If your truck is actualy 2 wheel drive, look for stands in 73 to 79 F100 through F350. Any of the above stands will interchange. You may have a little bit of a tough time finding them, but they are way cheaper than trying to purchase after market stands. Send more information and we can take it from there.
Skybob, I added pictures of the mounts that you will need to my gallery. It's kind of hard to see. There is a 460 on top of them. A 73 ford f100 under them, and headers almost all the way around. You can maybe get a general idea of what yours should look like any way.
I want it streat legal. No A/C, yes i want to keep p/s. 460 Came out of 79 F250 Supercab 2wd. No brackets/pulleys and the 76 is a 2wd. And thanks for the help. It is appreciated
If your 460 came from a 79 F series, there are no worries about the exhaust manifolds. You have to have either an F seies or E series exhaust manifold for the right side. A car manifold will not work. Do you have a power steering pump at all? If so, is it the one wih the little dip stick tube, or the one with the big round lid? Do not buy any brackets or pullies until we get this ironed out. You will see why by the time that your done. You may also need a drive shaft by the time that your finished, but I know of a cheap and easy way around that also. Also in your original post, you asked opinions on what we would do. Since you already have the 460, definately put it in. As I already mentioned, I put a 460 and c6 in mine and I'm very happy with it. The only other cheap option that you have would be to leave your 360 and c6 in there. The thing about that, is a 360 is just not that great. If I were to leave it in there, I would get the crank to stroke it to a 390 which makes a good set up also. Just for grins, crawl up under your truck, and find the rear end tag. Scrape off the dirt, and let us know what gear set you have. I'm running 3.00 gears and thinking about changing to 3.25. I had 3.50, but that was a little low. With the 360 and c6 in there, it will probably be from a 2.75 to a 3.25. Let us know.
