98 Ranger 4L Engine squeel
I've checked the obvious belts, pumps, alternator etc. They are not the issue.
The truck runs ok except for the noise. I do have an issue with P0171, and P0174 codes intermittently being triggered. I have not been able to find the cause of this either. I have checked / cleaned the MAF, IAC, EGR (its a California truck). I can't find any vacuum leaks and have replaced the PCV. The O2 sensors have been tested and are ok.
Anyone have any ideas?
The squeal, intermittent and pulsating sounds like a bearing being torn up. The only thing in the area would be the cam shaft, or possibly further back the oil pump drive.
I found a mechanic who works on engines, he seems to think it's internal, he didn't want to go any further, other than suggesting a teardown.
Thanks CowboyBilly9mile
A bad camshaft synchronizer could cause a squeeling noise. It's located in the back of the engine, near the fire wall, underneath the upper intake. The camshaft postion sensor (CMP) sits on top of it. One of those mechanic stethoscopes would help pinpoint the noise.
This thread talks about the CMP sensor and synchronizer on a 3.0L OHV engine, but everything is pretty much identical regarding the 4.0L OHV:

I took it to the Ford dealer, I don't know any private shops in my area that I would trust my bicycle with. They knew the problem right away. qoted me 400 to $500 fpr repairs. I took them up on it.
$481 dollars later, the squeal is gone, truck runs great. They charged me $219 for the shaft assembly. Did not change the synchoniser itself. $245 for 2.5 hrs labor. The gasket under the upper intake was also changed, included in the job. Hopefully that takes care of the CEL coming on.
Thanks Rockledge and CowboyBilly9Mile for your help. Problem solved.
