I need to pull my power stearing gear box. and try to reseal the top of it ir repalce it.the truck is a 97-f-350 cc 4x4
psd. can I use a pickle fork to pulll the tie rod of the pitman arm. and what kand of puller do i use to get the pitman arm off the PS gearbox./ Thanks Jh
Getting the pitman arm off of the steering box can be tricky. Sometimes one gets lucky with simply a pitman arm puller. If that doesn't work, use an acetylene torch and heat up two spots on the pitman arm 180 degrees apart....careful though, don't get the shaft too hot (tempered) and if you are re-using a seal (which you shouldn't be) you don't want to melt it. Last ditch effort is to use a die-grinder with a cutoff wheel and cut through the pitman arm parallel to the shaft. Leave a few thousandths and use a chisel and hammer to split the pitman arm....it will fall right off then.
Obviously, if you can't afford or don't want to buy a new pitman arm, the last ditch effort is out of the question.
Don't use a pickle fork on the pitman arm...you can easily damage the steering box.
Yep, and NAPA has them. I'm sure you can get them at other places too. Another trick is to use the puller to get tension on the pitman arm...then whack the press bolt a few times (vertically) then tighten it some more.
