Replaced fuel pump - now engine floods.

I replaced the fuel pump on my 84 F-150 300-6 because I noticed it was wet with gas around the crimp joint. Also replaced the fuel line as it was rusty at the pump connection. Everything fine until start-up when it started running rough. I looked down the carb throat and saw gas dripping into the intake at at pretty good rate. I rebuilt the carb last winter and it has been running great ever since - until today. I took the top of the carb off and blew as hard as I could into the fuel filter while holding the it upside down so the float would be in the closed position and it seemed to seal pretty good. When I moved the float up and down I could feel the needle and seat doing thier job - letting fuel (my breath) in and stopping the flow when it was in the closed position. My question is - has anyone had this problem before, that is , could the new fuel pump cause this? I got it at Pep-Boys - a Carter M60330 - at least thats what the box said. There were no numbers cast or stamped on the pump although it looked identical to the original that I took off. Do mechanical fuel pumps have some sort of internal pressure regulator to maintain an even pressure. I have a hard time believing that the carb decided to crap out the instant I replace the fuel pump. Thanks guys!! BrianH
