Murphy Found Me

Last Friday (14th) I broke my rear end racing. I was in the semi finals and had the kid I was racing beat (I cut a better light and he broke out). It was the best my truck had ever ran and it was super consistent. I ran 14.01 best (14.01, 14.05, 14.07, 14.03). Right after I left the rear end went pop (like a u-joint). I had 42 passes on it at the track and probably that many more on the street. I tore it apart today and found out that the pinion gear and a spider gear went. I have some pics here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...&albumid=18456 It was a 1955 F-100 Dana 44. I still have my Dana 41 that I will put back in until I get a 9 inch built. So I am accepting donations for 9 inch parts. I just had to rant or brag on a 50 year old rear end, however you want to take it.

Ahh...some duct tape, bondo, and super glue is all it needs.

You broke it well. When you break things do you usually do it well? I was hoping you would post pics when you told me about it.

I broke the one in 54 with a stock 223.I don,t trust the old dana,s after that.It was the axle that broke though.I put another axle in and was on the road again.
I bought a 9 from a 66 for mine.

Madathlon, it was an ouch I wasn't intending on having.

Brian_B, you forgot the bailing wire. I usually break things about as far as they can be broke when I break them (Just ask me about them sometime). I don't think I had the pics just yet when I told you about it.

redlightning, I didn't break an axle (I twisted one on the Dana 41 though, another long story). I have a 9 inch from a 1958 F-100 with 4.11 gears (Just needs rebuilt completely) that I plan on using.

Bobby, well I'm glad he left you alone, but why did he have to find me. Oh well, my Dana 44 was the weak link in my drivetrain anyway.

I got my Dana 41 put back in today. I will take it out for a test drive in a couple of hours (Just to make sure it still works fine).

It's not if I can break a 9 inch, it's when.

Yep! When you turn the nose of your truck down the road to the darkside it seem slike its always a game of finding a repairing the weekest link.

Next thing you know, you'll be shearing "U" joints, or shredding clutches

It'll all be fun!!

Let me salute the man who has such faith in his old truck! Go ahead and give this hotrod boy some grief... give him the "ya shoulda's".... It is just a joy to some of our desert dwelling Americans to sit back and enjoy the idea of a man having great fun with his truck.

on your side, himmelberg

Bobby, I already cork-screwed a drive shaft, so u-joints will probably be next.

Col Flashman, I think my problem got bigger too.

himmelberg, thanks I appreciate it. I will always have faith and fun in my truck (No matter what it costs).

I thought my test drive was going good, until when my tranny shifted into second gear. It was like I was hitting my brakes (You should know that I wasn't). So I guess it's tranny time again. I will keep you guys updated.

I checked the tranny fluid and its clean. I then put the truck up on jack stands and put it into first gear and ran it to about 1500 rpm, fine. I then shifted to second and ran it to 2000. This is where the problem is. When it shifted into second the rpm went from 2000 rpm to about a 1000 rpm (Jumping back and forth consistently). I feel that I may have messed up the torque converter somehow. I will call the guy who built the tranny tomorrow to see what he thinks. After this I checked the tranny fluid again and it still looked clean. I guess it might be time for a little bit of stall for the converter (Not outrageous, but just above stock).

Uh oh....Something tells me this is not good news. What transmission do you have in it? I know the engine is not anywhere close to stock.
