Brian_B it's a 700-R4 with Lucas Sure Shift tranny fluid. It's a stock 1996 Chevy 350 Vortec (Converted to a 600 Holley carb, HEI, bolck hugger headers, and Flowmaster exhaust).
When I went for the test drive; the tranny shifted to second and then the truck wanted stop (Like I was hitting the brakes). This was right after I left my house so I went back home. Could the axle and/or carrier bearing be dry(This rear end sat for awile) and causing this to happen? Thanks.
Brian I read what you posted last night and today it's different. It shifted fine on jack stands except for the rpm jumps.
I still have to call the tranny guy, but my dad talked to a guy at work that said it could be a sprag gear. Not sure but I thought I would post it anyways.
RPM jumps? Autos do act weird in the air sometimes. If its shifting now, it might be ok. We hope anyway.
Sprag clutch means a tear down. I am not sure where it is in that chevy. You might be able to just replace the clutch, but who knows where tiny pieces of metal went and what future damage it could cause (I am guessing the trans has some miles on it too). I have not worked on a chevy trans in many, many years (never that model), but rebuilding one yourself is not that hard.
The last ford (AOD-E) I did myself cost about $400 in parts and a weekend to do.
I put the trans in last summer (Fresh build). It has a lot of hard miles from racing this year, but street miles aren't that bad, but it was built to be hotrodded though. I figure the shock from the rear end breaking might have contributed to something. Oh well, I will see.

That's probably what it is. I had the same thing happen to me with a TH350. If so, there will be metal fragments in the pan. It's a good idea to replace the converter also unless you can have it drained. The sprag is a weak link in the TH350 and possibly in the 700-R4 too. There is a heavy duty sprag available that was used in Corvettes and other heavy duty applications. If you rebuild it use the heavy duty sprag.
Hotrod48,That sounds like a great combination you have. What was your mile per hour. And also what kind of fuel mileage are you getting?
Best of luck with your repairs.
redlightning, I love the combination. I think that is the reason why the truck runs the number it does. I was running 95.5 mph on the 14.01 pass. I get around 14 mpg with all sorts of driving (City, highway, hotrodding, etc). Thanks.
Hotrod48, That does sound good.It is probably going to be after Christmas before I can get back to working on my truck(1954).I haven,t completely made up my mind on what engine yet.I have a 292 that I will probably go with.I also have a 302 and aod, then there is the 223 six,and someone just gave me a 350 with a 3 speed manual.Again best of luck with your repairs.Carl
Just a little update. Today I finally dropped the tranny. It had a slight burnt smell to the fluid. The fluid was contaminated with little metallic particles, but cleaner than I thought it should be. I also found out my converter is trash (It rattles when I shake it, like the complete inside came loose). I will hopefully take it apart this week or weekend to see what else broke. I hope not much more.
Makes me wonder if my rear will hold the power of my 351?I feel bad for ya man, but your truck was holding its own, in my opinion at least, 14s, with that heavy of truck, proves Fords can run good. I know a rear end in a granada wouldn't hold up to the load on it in that car, sounded like gravel when that went.
