You won't find any FE engines in anything but a truck after 69. Sometime between 69-70 the 428 in cars was replaced w/ 429. The only FE engines post 69/70 were the 360/390 motors in trucks. 427's I think were discountinued w/ the advent of 428 cobrajet and Supercobrajet engines. Personally I've not run across a 427 or a 428 in the junk yards or used cars I've looked at in the last few years. I know my speed shop tells me that 428 cranks are pricey when you can find them. I did see a "428" in a machine shop that really was: A 391 FT block that has been bored and modified alittle to become a 428. FT blocks I guess are beefy enough to bore out that much. I'm thinking a 76 Thunderbird could have anything from a 351W, 429/460, maybe a 351M or a 400. My dad had a Lincoln Mk5 (78) that had a 400.
A lot of confused people in here!
fe427tp has it right.
the 390 had 401 hp in 61-63 with a triple deuce setup.
But these 390hipo engines had a different block.
Trust me, You won't find one in some old beater.
You guys need to remember that 427's were produced in limited numbers, it will be pretty much impossible to just find an old galaxie with a 427 in it. If the car was junked, someone got the 427 long ago.
428's never had 450hp.
They were never race engines(from the factory). They were long stroke/high torque street performance engines. 428 cj's were estimated at having 410hp. Only rated at 335
the early 390's had a 401 hp version because they were ford's race engine. Then the 406 became the race engine, 390's horsepower dropped.
Then 427's became the race motors. That's why they have the high hp numbers.
Unlike a 302, you can't just go in to a salvage yard and pull a 427 or a 428 up.
Fe's last year in cars was 71'
76' for trucks.
technically the 401 HP (390)engine was a dealer option tri-power package, not shipped from the factory with a tri-power till the 62
406 galaxies. My dads first car was a 375 Hipo 390 61 Starliner he ordered new, which he ran at the local dragstrip. Currently has another one which he built to 401 specs.

>427's go for about between $35,000-$50,000 these days.
nah you can get them cheaper than that unless your going to the wrong places, to spend 35,000 of a 427 you have to be trying to spend too much you could get a brand new cammer for less than that....
new 427 blocks are just coming available from genesis (this month i think) and you can now buy complete new engines with aluminum heads for about 9500. hawkrod
427's came in cougars, galaxies, fairlanes, comets and cobra's that I know of and some dealers are known to have put them in mustangs I know the 428's came in everything above and ranchero's, thunderbirds, and torino's as far as I can remember right now.
dont forget about the later 390s as well.. I had a 66 fairlane GTA.. but I still have the engine.. 390 3-2s.. 375 HP.. not as much as the earlier ones.. the early 390s with 3-2s were indeed 401 hp.. and dont forget that 406.. with the 3-2s.. 405 hp... and the later 390s with the single 4 was 320 hp... the 60s model FEs were indeed killer engines... latch onto anyone U see...
