427 is it a big block or small?? I got a 76 f100 with a 300 c.i. 6 cyl and 3spd manual trans. What would need changed for this motor to fit my truck. I can get a good running one for cheap. I know what the 428 and 429 are but unsure about this one? Help me man! I am not opposed to a trans. swap. Thanks!
427?Man what a runner!Dont pass that bad boy up,they are hard to find and they have alot of potential.Yes it is a big block,it bolts up different than a 390 or 428 though. It would work if you can find a bellhousing that would fit a 429 or 460 though. It should bolt right up to your tranny. But,it would perform alot better with a 4 speed!

ignore him
the back of the 427 is the same as a 390 except with a bigger bore, and different heads, it bolts up the same, uses the same flywheel, same starter, even the same bellhousing which is COMPLETELY different from a 429/460, he is right though about not passing it up if it is a 427, but make sure it is a 427 before you buy it, make sure it's crossbolted, make sure it hasn't been bored to .030 over yet, and try to get a guarantee it'll pass a magnaflux test. check for an adjustable valvetrain by pulling a valvecover and checking the rocker arms. get casting numbers, look for it to start with a C5 or C4 as a good indication
FE427TP is right. The 390, 427 and 428 are from the same family and bolt up to the tranny exactly the same. The 351C, 351W and below have one bellhousing pattern, the 351/400M, 370, 429, and 460 another. All are different from the FE patetern.
A good running 427 for cheap? That’s an oxymoron! Beware and check it out first like these guys say. If it really is one, it won’t like your truck. It’s a big bore short stroke nervous high-winding screamer that doesn’t like to lug. Save it for your racer. Good luck and let us know what you find.
Michael, Where in NC are you? We have some fellow FTEers that need to look at that engine with you to check the numbers to verify it as being a 427. That engine dead and not busted will bring $5000.00. So finding one at all, and it being cheap, is nearly impossiable, not totally. It is in the FE family 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, & 428. Someone might try to pass it off as a 427 when it is not. To the unskilled eye and a slick talker you might be convinced to purchase it.
One thing that you can do it take a 8-10" piece of the white wire from a 14-2 house wire cable, and take one of the front spark plugs, place the wire in the hole and have someone rotate the engine while having a marker resting against the manifold marking the wire. Rotate it a couple of times and report back the length of the mark.
My e-address is below if you want to have someone look at the engine with you.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
All,
As most of us know the 427 was a cobra engine or a GT40, Mark IV etc. These motors are tracked by professional collectors and do not sell cheap! Someone is telling stories and pulling your leg. If your interested in buying a 427, look in Hemmings motor news. There is one for sale in there about once a year!
Good Luck, Have Fun,
KingFisher
your 300-6 has the same bellhousing pattern as
302-351W,351C...also 250-6..
all the FE's were mentioned except for the 1957 FE
the 332.
depending on what you wanted for a transmission would determine how hard the swap would be.
if you did go 427..i'm guessing you would get rid of 3 on tree
Man I cant even begin to say how damn excited you guys got me about this motor. Well turns out its a 429.... how disapointing! Crushing my hopes and smashing dreams. I do want to thanks everyone for their help, and I will search on for a good swap. I think the 6 is about to expire and the 3 on the tree ...well that goes without sayin. Thanks again guys and ROCK ON!
what's wrong with a 429? I'd take one if it was offered to me. you can stroke it WAY bigger than the 427 and as much as I hate to say it with todays heads and development the 429 is the engine that will produce more horsepower inch per inch. Plus if it's the 71 or earlier variety with the D0VE heads you have 450hp potential with just a cam and intake swap
