The oil should certainly not be jet black immediately after a change. Again, I'd send a sample to Blackstone along with an explanation of what's happening and get them to tell you what they're seeing in the oil... not too expensive, and it'll give you a good idea if you should even try to fix them or move straight to rebuild. I'd suspect there's internal damage and you're getting oil contaminated with lots of fuel. Does the dipstick/oil smell like diesel?
There isn't as much to "tune up" in a diesel since there aren't any spark plugs. If Blackstone says things are totally hosed, I'd get the manual out and replace absolutely everything that has fluid in it, all filters, everything. For a start.
we had a 97 7.3L at my work that was seriously weak to the point of barly being able to pull a hill unladen above 15MPH. We replaced teh injector pump which helpe dalot, but the truck was still a dog.
Well, I found the problem, or at least the biggest part of it. I checked the air filters when I got to work this morning.....not good. Our oil change tech, whom we have done business with for many years, is supposed to be checking and replacing the filters as needed. Lets just say that he hasnt for a VERY long time. There was about a quarter of an inch of "crap" on the fins of the filters in both trucks. In fact, you couldnt even see the fins at all. It was really horrible. Tomorrow, I'm gonna go to his office and throw the dirty filters on his desk, and ask why the (EDIT) the filters werent changed.
Needless to say, the trucks run ALOT better...that tends to happen when the trucks aren't being suffocated. I don't drive the trucks very often, but our drivers say that its like driving a different truck.
I'm still gonna send some oil to Blackstone, just to be safe.
Clearly, these trucks are in serious disrepair. Don't assume that *anything* has been done. If it's got fluid in it, change it. If it's got a filter, replace it.
IF you read the entire post, not just bits of it, you'll see that he took over from the guy they fired for not maintaining them. He's just now trying to figure out what's wrong with the trucks because he's in charge of it now.
