I am going orbital here. All the news I hear is saying how sorry they are that the poor chinese pilot died. That he had a wife and family. Well whoop dee doo. He almost killed the crew of our plane and last time I checked there was a lot more of them on the Orion then on the F8. There is no question that the chinese were the cause of the accident. Yea, we were spying on them (What were we supposed to buy them off?) but we were in open waters and not in restricted air. I have two words for china: BITE ME.
I'm flying my flag 24 hours a day with a light on it in support of our troops.
A big part of the problem is that both nations have a jackass in charge. When Bush jr was demanding the safe return of our unmolested airplane, I knew we were in trouble. If both sides had agreed to let china keep the plane, with the immedialte release of our service people, both sides could have claimed victory. Now we have an ego battle brewing between Bush jr and the chinese, they don't think the way we do, and they have millions of soldiers that they are willing to sacrifice as cannon fodder, if they believe it will get them some honour. I am afraid for our soldiers and all of the rest of us. DF
Exactly bush is a power hungry little brat. When Clinton was still in we wernt hitting planes in the air, destroying boats with submarines. Makes you wonder what it would be like if Gore did win huh?we probibly wouldent be on the road to WW3 thats how it seems with Bush jr. just my 2 cents.

LAST EDITED ON 07-Apr-01 AT 02:50 PM (EST)[p]Gimme a break! You actually want to blame the recent military embarassments on the President? Can I have some of whatever you've been smoking? These last 2 messages are the most inane, illogical, ridiculous pieces of partisan tripe I've had the misfortune to read in a long time.
First of all you can't possibly blame the President for the individual actions of every member of the military.
Second if you insist on blaming someone besides the individuals then you'd better look at your golden boy, ex-first felon Slick ***** who was undoubtedly in office when these individuals enlisted. Even if he wasn't let's not forget just who tried his very best to emasculate the military at every turn for the last 8 years.
Third I'm proud of the way we're handling this issue. I'd be more upset if we apologized and capitulated to the Chinese. Sure they're going to go through that spy plane with a fine toothed comb. I hope the technicians on board were able to follow their instructions well enough to destroy most of the top secret surveillance equipment on board. We have to go through the necessary diplomatic formalities to get our people and equipment back. There's no danger of a war at all, so enough with the "chicken little" gig boys.

Your right, instead we bombed aspirin factories and China's Embassy.
I think we are going about exactly like we should. We have nothing to apologize for, and everything to be upset about. China wants to be part of the world community, but still wants to make up their own rules? That's BS at it's worst. Clinton and his goons did nothing but make it worse, by giving in to practically all china's demands and wishes in his time. We have given the chinese defense technology and trained their pilots among other things, all thanks to little *****. And that we have a leader who isn't going to put up with this, they're all upset. I guess they should be upset, becuase thanks to bush, they are now going to have to learn to play fair in the world instead of getting their every wish met. I'm no big fan of bush, but this incident has shown me that if nothing else, the man knows when to hold his own.
dinosaurfan and 77_F150_4X4. You two need to pay a little more attention to the facts. Both of you are a tadd off in your logic. bill_beyer did a good job of explaining it to you if you can handle it. Bush is power hungry? Can you defend that statement or show proof that he is? We are the world's only superpower at this time (although not for much longer thank's to *****). Bush is right to demand our plane back and our people.
Am I to understand that we are just supposed to roll over and give them our plane that they damaged and they forced down into their country? That is boulderdash.
Well looky here. One of the stories to come out of this is that after the chi-com's forced our plane down, the Navy (ours) wanted to put on a big show of force, off of china's coast. The commander-in-chief (That would be George W. Bush) said "go play some where else".)
Love to talk politics (unfortunately). My thought was that the chinese pilot had specific instructions to create an accident or had jamming or surveillance equipment of his own that needed close proxcimity to work. I don't think it turned out exactly as he had planned however. China is laughing at us, making our leader grovel and mince works to "appologize" for the incident. They are just buying time to gleam every last tidbit they can from our plane and crew and maybe divert us from other things they may be doing. We (the US) need to see China as not being someplace that we can "convert" to be like us, but as a strong potential adversary that should be treated with caution. Just as bad is the fact we are giving Russia over 400 mil per year so they can keep track of their nuclear bombs and to supposedly pay their scientists more to keep them there. When will we ever learn we can't buy friendship and expect it to last...?
I agree with dinasorfan. But I will add this. We are not the worlds super power. Yes we used to be, but we no longer are. If Russia wanted to take us to war, we would lose. If China wanted to take us to war, we would lose. Now could you imagine if Russia and China came together? If I remember right, during the Vietnam war, they could lose 30 soldiers to our 1. Thats 30 to 1 ratio. Yet we still sent our soldiers into that hell. You trust your elected officials?
We will not get our plane back. So we need to concentrate on getting our soldiers back, safe and sound. Besides, that plane has already been stip searched! Also, if we continue to crucify our own soldiers for accidents (sub & fishing boat) then who will want to join the military? People are going to be scared to death because if an accident happens, they will be punished to the full extent. I almost joined the Air Force last summer, but looking back on it, I am so glad I never did! Bush wants to live up to his daddy's legacy. It's so pathectic! Now this is just my opinion folks. No need to get upset or yell back. We are all entitaled to our opinions.
I agree that we have nothing to apologize for. However one thing bothers me. If the plane would fly 70 miles to China, then it should have been able to fly at least 70 miles away from China. Then if they couldn't make it any further, that is what parachutes, life rafts, (and explosives to destroy security eq)and our sea rescue is for. You don't land a spy plane in the country that you have been spying on, and expect to just say Hi & Good bye. The USA wouldn't, so why should we expect China
to? There was a very bad judgement call/training, either in the pilot's wanting to land in China or in the upper comand telling him to. Bob
Q: If we are not the world's superpower, why aren't we?
A: Well, I would have to say because Clinton cut our military in half. As far as I know we only have half of what we started with when Bush was in office. The morality in our troops is low. They get little respect, and most of all the other countries have secretly built up their arms. The cold war never ended. It ended on paper, but thats it. Clinton's State of the Union Address on his second term said that there are NO nuclear weapons in Russia aimed at our country. And they (the congress & people) loved hearing that. Little do the people of USA know, it only takes Russia 20 seconds to program their nukes and re-aim them. 20 seconds! What did Clinton accomplish? Absolutely nothing!
Q: Should we be concerned about china and russia? If we are, shouldn't we develop our missile defense shield?
A: Hell yes we should be concerned about these two countires. To build a missile defence shield? Well I believe we already have them. If you drive through Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Idaho, you can see small bunkers off the side of the road. You can hardly see them and would think nothing of it. Well, to my knowledge there are missiles in there. Are they nukes? I havent a clue. Are there really missiles in there? Maybe not. But they were built durring the cold war. I would bet most are still active.
Q: Bush is following his dad and looking for a legacy. I think pathetic is the word you used. What word do you use for clinton's actions?
A: coward
Q: And finally, if we would lose, why don't we just roll over now and admit that the chi-coms are right. After all it would save a lot of spilled blood.
A: I hope we never will have to do battle with them. But sooner or later we might have too. I hope to God we don't lose. I have faith in our troops. But changes in out military need to be made. It will take time to build our military up. We can do it. But Bush needs to do it the right way. I don't know, I don't have the answers. I just hope we can work this out between Japan and China.
