A nice little tomahawk shot from 50 miles off the coast would have been nice. "Whoops, sorry China. Looks like we had a missle accidently go off. What a shame it blew up our own plane. Boy, those inferior China-made circuit boards are gonna get us in trouble. By the way, we were doing a commando raid training on one of your islands & guess which 24 military personel are no longer going to bother you?"
Sometimes I wish we could go back to the '80's where the motto was "Peace through superior firepower"
We have to use force, i will gladly die to save those 24 men and woman from china, i would be the first on the beach and the first to pull the trigger, without thinkin twice. i would be waving my confederate flag too, those little people would be so scared they wouldnt know what to do.
The news is slowly coming out. It appears our plane was on auto pilot which makes it that much more unlikely that our plane would have collided with theirs unless they (the F8's) were someplace they shouldn't have been. Additionally it appears that the 2nd F8 requested permission to shoot down the Orion after the first one went down. That was denied. The Orion was trying to leave but the F8 it appears, forced it to land in china.
I would still maintain that if the plane was flying - it would have been realistic to limp home. It would not have been a fun flight but I believe the Orion is cabable of it.
Since you mention dying I would point out a small item. During WWII when the chinese and Japanese where enemies. Japan would send troops over to kill chinese. They would kill several thousand chinese at a time while losing only a hundred or so. This went on for some time. Someone finally asked china what they thought about all the people they were losing. china replied that at that rate, soon there would be no Japanese.
Storming china's beaches will never be practical. You have a couple of options when dealing with a country with the mentality they have for live and as many people as they have. The options involve heavy firepower - nukes, or chemical warfare using viruses and disease. This are two extreme options that do not fit the current scenario. Don't get me wrong. I demand the return of our Americans, now! But they (our personnel) are military personnel and not civilians. china knows that it will incite the American people if it harms them.
No apology, no way, not ever and we want our people and plane back.
China is a very while, sick country. Their population is too high because that is what they beileved in, they forced themselves to get pop. problems. How big is the Chinese military? I don't think they would have enough money to send over a boat load of un-armed citizens against aremd U.S. citizens(unless Gore were president, thankfully we still have the 2nd amendment). If we shot a nuclear bomb/"insecticide" at China we would help them solve their population, perhaps we should only threaten to launch a bomb?
About the plane accident, the Orion had time to move out of the way of the F-8, especially if the F-8 was also trying to dodge the Orion. The wing of the Orion only had to move up/down a few feet. China is a long flight from the U.S., for a plane the size of the Orion with an area of it's wing taken out and 2 failed engines, I don't think it would have much of a chance of makeing the flight. However I haven't seen pictures of the wreckage, if 2 engines were to fail but no damage to the wing, there would be a better(but still not very high) chance of getting back. I wouldn't dought there was also fuel leaking out of the wing.
To answer why the F-8 would lead the Orion: The Chinese would praise the fighter pilot for bringing back a slightly damaged piece of America's top technology to be studied in labs.
About Wars, there are very few wars the U.S. has lost, what about China? I bet they all regret ever bombing Pearl Harbor. Remeber the revolution war? There was almost no chance of the U.S. winning, but we won. Sure those were a long time ago, but I believe that we could easily win any fight between China.

The way i understand it, the plane and pilots are off the coast of the mainland china on Hainan. so we only have to take the island not the whole country. but i could be wrong
And here is an article that shoots down the "forced landing" & our plane getting shot down ideas.

Uuuuhh, I think the articule reaffirmed that the F8 wanted to shoot down the Orion. It doesn't mention warning shots. The bit that the Orion would soon crash or land, well, I guess we will find out the straight poop shortly. Either way the chinese are to blame for the misshap. Fortunatly the crew is coming home and with any luck what is left of the plane might also.
A tense situation has been defused for the time. I'll call it a win for our side - not a pretty one, but sometimes you can't be too picky.
