Well guys been awhile on this topic, been researching on the mustang boards too. Aparently the 331 with the stock 5.09 rods will not even work to them pistons come out the bottom . But initally this is the way I'm going to build mine 3.25 stroke crank, 5.09(302) rods, sbc 350 pistons cut down, roller valvetrain, heads are still up in the air looking for a decent set of aluminums or just E6SEs, stock truck intake, custom cam and the 28oz balancing.
Just hoping with the 28oz. balancers they are 4bolt so I can retain my serp. pulley. flywheel not sure on that one either I have a 5speed so have to research that.
Should I get a set of right hand or left hand pistons for this set up since they are diffrent?
The cam will be under 500lift around low 210-220 duration so shoulden't be any issues with the dynamic compression.
I know I won't need a Tweecer reprogrammer but not sure how it will work with the new MAF and 24lb injectors.
just my .o2 most of the aftermarket rotating assemblies for the 331 use offset pin holes to reduce side loading and noise. i have seen many 331's with 3.25 crank, 5.4 rods that work well for many years...no noise, smoke, or life issues. i would stay away from modifying chevy pistons. as for heads, the e7's arent that great...they will work, but you need a little better flow to really wake the engine up. for the cost, you cant beat the edelbrocks or the ford aluminum gt-40's. some places are selling pulls off gt-40 heads from ford crate engines---cheap....shop around you will be happy you did.
Well everyone can put their opinions and knowlege in. My machinist hates the wrist pin through the oil control ring conviced me that the stock rods will not wear as fast being he has 5 331s(1/2mile circle track cars) on their 5th season nothing done to the lower end, I feel with that the "other" 331 will do just fine my friends 331 in his bronco smokes chatters with the 5.4 rods some are hit some are miss I guess. Heads yes I have been looking into the edelbrocks and gt40s even porting and polishing a set of iron ford heads I don't like doing them I put way too many hours in heads. But the 331 is still up in the air I have to get my sbc complete first get that thing out of the way .
