289 or 331

I was thinking about stroking my 289 into a 331 but i am on a budget and was wondering how much power increase i would expect form the 331ci; will i even be able to feel it when i go to stomp on the gas? If i decide to stroke it should i should i spend my $$ on a 331 "kit" or use 289 rods 3.25 crank, kb322 pistons. found that idea here. http://www.fordmuscle.com/forums/str...ted_18767.html tell me what you think thanks?

You'd be better off to start with a 302 block since it has more material at the bottom of the cylinder bores to help support the piston at the bottom of the stroke. 302 blocks are cheap and plentiful, and you could even get a newer roller block so you can go roller cam.

Will you feel it? I'd be surprised if you didn't...

They main difference will be potential tourqe output at lower rpm. The 289 with equal heads will produce as much HP on the high end, with a bit more cam and few hundred rpm more engine speed. The 289 will have a better rod/stroke ratio offsetting the extra displacement a little bit. It may depend on what you plan on using it in. In a relatively light weight vehicle you may not be able to really utilize the extra tourqe. In a heavy vehicle, were you want more grunt down low, then the extra displacement would be welcome.

I think it's much more important to improve the breathing of the heads, instead of increasing the cubic inch displacement, if your going to spend the extra money. AFR or TFS heads will do more than just about anything else on this series of motors. Streetable 400HP 302's are possible using heads of that caliber, and a 380HP 289 is quite realistic. A 331 still needs improved heads to realize it's potential anyway, or you will still produce only about 320-335 HP with the 331 using lesser flowing heads.

You would need to buy the stroker plus the heads to produce 400 plus HP with a 331.

well it is sounding like the best bang for my buck is going to be to rebuild the 289 and spand my money on some good heads and cam. what heads should i run should i look for 351w D0OE and port them or just go for AFR 165 or 185 or somthing totaly different.

AFR165's or TFS Twisted Wedge are the better street heads for a 289 or 302. The AFR165's come in 58cc combustion chambers. The AFR165 and the TFS will still out perform most other (ported) heads right out of the box. The current version of FRP GT40X is almost as good as the AFR165 and will probably be less money.
