Just remember New York fellow... you personally have jumped in a few threads and noted the fact that just because problems get posted on this site they are not an good indicator that the problem is wide spread...nobody posts unless they have a problem...
Example my 2005 3v V10 version has only had the fuel line retaining clip TSB done... down 2 hours. Other then that she is down a few hours every 3rd month for scheduled maintenance.. better then 98% up and available time on this rig.
I figure at 20,000 miles and 14months daily service that this particular truck has been the most reliable so far of every vehicle I ever owned... fingers crossed and knocking on wood as I spell check and post this.
I wouldn't consider this a widespread problem either. It's a computer chip - I work in that field for a living and you do get the occassional bad chip. Get a new one, put it in and get back to work.
All in all, I've had real good luck with fords. Since my 1998 f150 to my 02 f250 to my 05 f250 (and including my 04 Mach 1) this is my first actual problem with a vehicle other than the fuel clip recall. Not bad for 8 years and 4 vehicles.
I'm just glad it happened after my trip but it's still a bad time to happen with hunting season but glad we don't have snow and ice yet.
I was skeptical at first of getting the v10 after reading some issues w/spark plugs/etc.... but after reading additional posts from all of you regarding the power and all the other good things you say about it, you convinced me to get the v10.
1 hour later and says that they finally were able to find the problem. The chip for the throttle body is the problem.
Just a note, I had some serious problems with my truck when it was new(5 new PCM's, etc.). I'm sure some of you remember. But without getting into all that again, one of the issues was this exact problem. They replaced the throttle body and TPS and the truck runs soooo much better now. I only have 4500 miles as of now but am hoping this was one of the main problems. I think you may be correct Fred in assuming this may be a trouble area to look at first.
